Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G6 review - The inexpensive multimedia laptop with a Ryzen 7000
The ThinkBook series from Lenovo consists of models for private customers (IdeaPad, Yoga) and models for business use. This makes ThinkBooks interesting for private users, for example those working from home, as well as for smaller companies. We have tested the current 16-inch model, the ThinkBook 16 G6, which can be found for around US$870 and features an AMD Ryzen 5 processor as well as a matte IPS panel. It additionally has 16 GB RAM and a 512-GB PCIe SSD.

Case & connectivity
The laptop's silver case looks great and its aluminum lid features two different gray tones in combination with big "ThinkPad" writing. This color scheme continues on the base unit (which is made from plastic) and only the darker keyboard and black bezels offer some contrasting color. All-in-all, the ThinkBook doesn't seem to attract many fingerprint marks. Its weight of 1.8 kg is average and none of the comparison devices take up too big a space.
Its build quality is fine and we noted no creaking noises, however, the base unit can be noticeably pushed in and the bottom cover is just made from rough plastic, which doesn't feel too great. The lid is more stable but twisting it leads to halos on the screen. In addition, our test sample seems to have a slightly dented lid, which you can see in the left image below. The hinges are set nicely and allow for a maximum opening angle of 180 degrees. Its maintenance options are good thanks to its two SO DIMM slots and one M.2-2280 slot, plus, the WLAN module can also be switched out.
The ThinkBook has USB-C and USB-A ports, meaning you won't need any adapters in everyday use. It unfortunately doesn't feature USB 4.0 but it does have an HDMI 2.1 output. The SD card reader accepts full-featured SD cards and its transfer rates of 80-90 MB/s are respectable. The WLAN module (MediaTek MT7921) supports Bluetooth 5.1 and WLAN 6, however, its maximum speed is limited to 1,200 MBit/s, as shown in our WLAN test. This doesn't lead to any limitations in everyday use. The laptop's 1080p webcam does its job and takes decent photos in good lighting conditions.

Input devices - Numerical pad and illumination
Lenovo has given the ThinkBook a keyboard with a dedicated numerical keypad — although its keys are a little narrower. Typing feels nice on the keys which feature a lift of 1.5 mm and even writing longer texts feels comfortable, however, our test device couldn't quite live up to the more expensive ThinkPads or a few Yoga models. In dark surroundings, a white illumination with two brightness settings comes to the rescue. The arrow keys are nicely sized and there are dedicated keys for up and down. A fingerprint scanner is integrated into the power button.
When taking into account the base unit's size, the clickpad (120 x 75 mm) could be a little bigger, however, it works perfectly fine. It is nice and smooth and our clicks were recognized reliably. You should probably just tap it rather than actually clicking it, as it lets out quite a loud and cheap-sounding click noise.
Display - Matte IPS panel
The ThinkBook 16 G6 has a matte IPS panel with an aspect ratio of 16:10 featuring a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. Subjectively, this display looks good with regard to the device's price class — even brighter surfaces don't appear grainy. Its reaction speeds are unproblematic and it doesn't use any PWM. One problem, however, is the pronounced halos around the edges of the display.
Lenovo has stated that the screen has a brightness of 300 cd/m² and this was confirmed in our measurements — we noted a maximum of 310 cd/m² and an average of 290 cd/m². Its black value is at a low 0.22 cd/m², leading to a maximum contrast ratio of more than 1,400:1 despite its average brightness values.

* ... smaller is better
We tested the panel using the professional CalMAN software and in its delivered state, the laptop's screen had a bit of a yellow tint. Furthermore, it showed massive color deviations, making it clear that this is quite a cheap IPS panel. We managed to get the color tint under control by calibrating the display, but this reduced its maximum brightness by about 40 cd/m². However, the color deviations remained and together with its poor color space coverage (only 60 % sRGB), this makes the ThinkBook unsuitable for picture editing.

The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 38 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is similar to the average of all tested devices (33.7 ms). |

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Outside, the panel's brightness of 300 cd/m² makes it a little difficult to read from the display. The IPS screen's viewing angle stability is fine, however, looking at it from above and from a slight angle leads to quite a loss in contrast.
Performance - The ThinkBook with a Zen3 CPU
Testing conditions
The power mode can be switched via the Fn+Q key combination and you can choose between maximum performance (48/38 watts), intelligent cooling (38/28 watts) and battery saving mode (9 watts). The TDP settings differ significantly and you can easily use the intelligent performance mode for simple tasks; we used the maximum performance mode for the following benchmarks and measurements.
Processor - Ryzen 5 7530U
The AMD Ryzen 5 7530U offers six Zen 3 cores (max. 12 threads) — at the end of the day, this is basically an old Ryzen 5 5625U whose maximum clock rate has been raised by 200 MHz (max. 4.5 GHz). Its multi-core performance remains competitive and the Ryzen chip came between the Core i5-1335U and the Core i7-1355U in its competitors. However, the Zen 3 processor was clearly beaten when it came to single-core performance. All-in-all, this performance is sufficient for normal office applications and it also remains constant in battery mode. The processor's performance isn't entirely stable under continuous load, but its deficit of less than 5 % is very small. Further CPU benchmarks can be found in our tech section.

System performance
In everyday use, the ThinkBook 16 G6 is a fast-reacting system, which is also in part to do with its fast SSD. Inputs are executed promptly and we had no issues with lags or crashes during our test. Its synthetic benchmark results were also decent.

Storage devices
Our test device's M.2-2280 slot is occupied by a compact M.2-2242 SSD from SK Hynix with a capacity of 512 GB, of which 419 GB are free to use after first starting up the ThinkPad. Unfortunately, the PCIe-4.0 SSD is only connected via PCIe 3.0, but it resulted in decent transfer rates (max. more than 3 GB/s). Further SSD benchmarks can be found here.

Graphics card
An integrated Radeon RX Vega 7 takes care of graphics calculations — it had to admit clear defeat to the other competitors when it came to performance. The slightly dated iGPU is powerful enough for basic tasks including playing high-resolution video, but not much more. At least, its performance remains stable in battery use and under continuous load.
If you want to use the ThinkBook 16 G6 to play games, then you will often be limited to minimum or medium details — even when running older or less demanding games. Further GPU benchmarks can be found here.

Emissions & power
Noise emissions
In everyday use, the laptop's singular fan is often completely deactivated and even short load peaks are absorbed effortlessly. It does take about 30 seconds for the fans to switch on under full load. When gaming, you can expect about 32 dB(A) and during our stress test, we measured 41.4 dB(A) in maximum performance mode. This can of course be heard, but it elicits no annoying frequencies. When using the mode intelligent cooling, we measured a total of 38.8 dB(A) and in battery saving mode, we noted 28.4 dB(A). We didn't notice any other electrical noises coming from our test device.

Temperature
In everyday use, the ThinkBook 16 G6's surface temperatures only rise by a small amount but under load, this changes significantly. The left half of the laptop gets considerably warmer, as the cooling unit with the singular fan is positioned here. Under load, we measured up to 50 °C on the bottom of the base unit, so in this case, you shouldn't place the device on your thighs during use. The area around the keyboard remains a bit cooler with temperatures hitting 40 °C at most — this is a lot more comfortable and apart from some warm fingers, it doesn't limit your typing at all. In the stress test with combined CPU/GPU load, the processor balanced out quickly at 38 watts and this remained stable.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.8 °C / 105 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50.5 °C / 123 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.1 °C / 81 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) Playing The Witcher 3, the average temperature for the upper side is 30.8 °C / 87 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.1 °C / 80.8 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.7 °C / 81.9 F (+0.6 °C / 1.1 F).

With a maximum idle consumption of 7.7 watts, the ThinkBook 16 G6 is a very frugal 16-inch device, but this is of course also due to its comparatively dim display. We measured a maximum of 66.6 watts during the stress test, so the limit of its 65-watt power supply (309 grams) was hit. However, since the consumption quickly levelled out at 58 watts, this should not be a major problem in practice.

Runtimes
Lenovo has only given the ThinkBook 16 G6 a 45 Wh battery, but thanks to its low consumption, decent runtimes can still be achieved. At 150 cd/m² (which corresponds to 79 % of the maximum brightness on our test device), the video test ran for around 11.5 hours and the WLAN test ran for just over 10 hours. At full display brightness, the result of the WLAN test dropped to ~8 hours. Overall, these are decent results, but with a larger battery, you could expect significantly better runtimes (and there is certainly enough space in the case). A full charge takes around 100 minutes with the device switched on, whereby 60 % is available again after just 30 minutes.

Verdict - A big office laptop with a matte IPS display
Lenovo's ThinkBook 16 G6 is a big laptop for working from home which features a matte IPS panel without any PWM. Subjectively, its picture quality is good but due to its high color deviations and low color space coverage, it isn't suitable for editing pictures. Inside, its maximum brightness of 300 cd/m² is sufficient but outside, it might get a little harder to read from its display.
Its case also features an overall good quality and its SSD, WLAN and RAM modules can all be swapped out and upgraded. There are plenty of connectivity options and aside from an up-to-date HDMI output, out also has access to a speedy SD card reader. You just have to make do without USB 4.0
No highlights, but also no major weaknesses: The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G6 is a well-balanced and affordable laptop for working from home if you are looking for a decent keyboard and a large IPS screen.
The AMD Ryzen processor's model name may suggest that it features a modern Ryzen 7000 chip, however, at the end of the day, it is simply a two-year-old processor with slightly higher clocking Zen4 cores. In the multi-core tests, its performance was still competitive, but the Intel chips were much faster in the single-core tests. Either way, its performance is definitely still enough for normal office tasks. Despite its low battery capacity, the laptop's runtimes are actually decent. The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 is a slightly better office laptop which primarily benefits from an optional panel with a brightness of 400 cd/m² and full sRGB coverage. On the other hand, it uses a Zen 3 processor.
Price and availability
Currently, the ThinkBook 16 G6 can be found on Amazon for around US$870.
