Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G4 Laptop review: Solid laptop with plenty of lightweight metal

Lenovo has been making ThinkBooks since 2019. These laptops fall in line with many features shared between Lenovo's IdeaPad and ThinkPad brands. Like the ThinkPads, they are superior to IdeaPads in terms of their ports, but have worse displays when compared to the models for end customers. In terms of quality, ThinkBooks are similar to entry-level ThinkPads in the E Series. This means that the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G4 will also likely end up in various offices. The new AMD Ryzen 5 5625U ensures a highly responsive system.
We have compared the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G4 to other 14- and 15-inch laptops for use in offices. The Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G4 also features among the comparison devices. This slightly larger laptop is almost identical to the 14-inch version. Other devices intended for use in offices include the Dell Inspiron 14, the Dynabook Tecra A40-J-12-E and the Schenker Work 15.

Casing – Aluminium for cover and base
Silver and grey are the colours used for the ThinkBook's exterior. Lenovo has kept the design appealing and played around with the structures of the surface and cover somewhat. This produces a dual-colour effect despite this being monochrome anodised aluminium. The top of the base consists of a matching lacquered plastic. An aluminium alloy has once again been used for the underside of the base. The ThinkBook hearkens back to its origins, the design being typically Lenovo.
Features – Still no USB 4 in the Barcelo Ryzen
Despite the ThinkBook 14 G4 missing a number of features when looking at its ports, you can still work with its four USB sockets, HDMI and SD card reader. You will, however, have to do without Thunderbolt or USB 4. USB 4 is only possible with the new 6000 series of AMD CPUs.
SD Card Reader
The SD card reader on this ThinkBook was capable of achieving good speeds with our reference card. However the AV PRO microSD 128 GB V60 would also be capable of faster transfer speeds.

Communication
Since previous incarnations, Realtek has also developed a Wi-Fi module with Wi-Fi 6. The Realtek RTL8852AE provided good transfer speeds in the test, but was not quite able to keep up with the values produced by laptops with Intel's AX201 chip.
Webcam
With its crisp contrasts in addition to solid performance under favourable lighting conditions, this office notebook's full HD webcam impressed us in the test. Little ambient light results in a very noisy image. A mechanical cover can also ensure privacy. The wide-angle lens' fisheye effect is striking. The camera does not support Windows Hello face authentication.

Security
In addition to the AMD Ryzen 5, a fingerprint sensor as well as a Kensington lock slot ensure security. The AMD processor supports security features such as TPM 2.0 and SecureBoot.
Maintenance
The base of the notebook can be removed quickly. A number of upgrade opportunities can be found underneath. There is a free M.2 slot here. In addition to this, the existing RAM module of the NVMe SSD can also be replaced. Almost all components have also been installed into the ThinkBook 15 G4 in this way.
Warranty
The configuration used in our test only comes with a warranty of 12 months in Germany. Various warranty options are, however, available worldwide in the Lenovo Vantage program.
Input Devices – Flat keyboard
The touchpad and the notebook's backlit keyboard work reliably. The keyboard layout here corresponds to the ISO standard. Button spacing and size are reasonable. Typing here feels very similar to the IdeaPad keyboards. Low key travel and little haptic feedback means that the keyboard may take a little getting used to. However, once you are used to it, the keyboard is fine.
The touchpad is also more at the level of that on an IdeaPad. You won't find a TrackPoint like what you may know from ThinkPads on the ThinkBook 14.
Display – Low colour space coverage
Das matte und recht helle Full-HD-Display (1920 × 1080 Pixel) des Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G4 bietet keine besonderen Features oder Auffälligkeiten. 16:9-Format, 60 Hz und eine recht geringe Farbraumabdeckung sind für einen Büro-Laptop jedoch ausreichend.
Die Ausleuchtung des Bildschirmes ist nicht sonderlich gleichmäßig und auch der Kontrastwert ist eher gering. Aber auch hier sehen wir die Anforderungen für einen Büro-Computer erfüllt.

Regarding the colour space coverage, the screen of this office laptop exhibits typical values. 62.9% sRGB coverage and 42.2% and 43.6% for Display P3 and AdobeRGB colour space coverage respectively are suitable for this laptop's use cases.
Calman ColorChecker detected fairly high values with regard to colour deviations. The low colour space coverage is primarily reflected in the maximum values measured. This means that the full colours red, blue and green do not fall in line with the specifications. The calibration file from the info box provides only a minor improvement in terms of the average colour deviation to a Delta E of 4.5.

Performance – Slight performance increase thanks to Barcelo
The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G4 is available with either Intel or AMD processors in a number of memory variants. Our test laptop comes with the AMD Ryzen 5 5625U and 16 GBs of RAM. Of this, 8 GBs are contained in SO-DIMM RAM. The notebook's RAM can therefore be expanded.
The configurations are clearly adapted to suit the requirements of an office laptop. However, while the ThinkBook is impressive when it comes to office and browser applications, it can't quite keep up with other laptops with regard to games and 3D applications.
Test Conditions
Most benchmarks with the ThinkBook 14 G4 were conducted with the "smart cooling" performance mode active. This balanced performance mode is available through the Lenovo Vantage program. The maximum performance mode was also activated to determine maximum power consumption and fan noise.
Processor
As a mobile processor for smaller and lighter notebooks, the AMD Ryzen 5625U in the ThinkBook 14 G4 can make full use of its performance potential. With its Zen 3 architecture, this processor from the Barcelo refresh from the start of 2022 is powerful here. This is hardly surprising, seeing as the processor in this Lenovo laptop is able to work continuously at its maximum configurable TDP of 25 watts. The laptop will maintain this performance while in maximum performance mode. With "smart cooling" activated, the processor will receive 15 watts.
With turbo power, we measured around 50 watts here. This allows the processor clock to remain above 2.3 GHz even for long periods of time and reach up to 4.3 GHz for brief periods.
Overall, the Ryzen 5 exhibited strong performance in the generic benchmarks. In the almost identical ThinkBook 15 G4, the processor benchmarks were conducted in maximum performance mode.

System Performance
In the system benchmarks, this laptop exhibited the expected results for a good laptop with an AMD processor. For example, the scores for PCMark 10 and CrossMark are excellent in the subfields under multicore load, while the Intel processors show their strengths while under single-core load in particular.
As a result, we have no complaints regarding the laptop's system performance.

Graphics Card
AMD has not updated the Ryzen 5 graphics card. As a result, the well-known AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 iGPU is at work here. The graphics chip can perform basic tasks as well as cope with 3D applications to some extent. In the games tested, the graphics card was able to generate playable framerates at medium quality settings and resolutions.
