Earlier this year, Lenovo announced the Legion Go S — a new gaming handheld available in Windows and SteamOS variants. The Windows version, which was the first to be available for purchase, has a starting price of $649.99 for the base model with a Ryzen Z2 Go processor, 16GB RAM, and 512GB of storage. There's also a version that costs $729.99, which has the same processor but 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
On the other hand, the SteamOS version has a starting price of $599.90 and it has the same Ryzen Z2 Go processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. There's also a more powerful version with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage for $829.99.
Now, Best Buy has the Legion Go S (Windows) with 32GB RAM version on sale for $499.99, over $200 off its original price. Not only is this a better deal than the 16GB RAM version sold by Amazon for $649.99, but it is also the device to buy instead of the base model of the SteamOS version; and the reason is simple.
While benchmarks and real life usage has shown that the Legion Go S (SteamOS) performs significantly better than the Windows version, the upside to buying the Windows version is that you can officially install SteamOS on it. There are guides online on how to officially install SteamOS on supported handhelds such as the original Legion Go as well as the Legion Go S (Windows). Also, you get better specs for less money compared to purchasing the base model of the SteamOS version and also have a free Windows license. Best Buy says the deal ends on July 14, so you have to hurry.
The Lenovo Legion Go S has an 8-inch 120Hz LCD touch display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. The display has VRR (variable refresh rate) support and has a max brightness level of 500 nits. The RAM is LPDDR5X and the SSD is an M.2 2242 NVME PCIe Gen4. It also has a MicroSD card slot for adding more storage.
In addition, the handheld has a 55.5Whr battery and comes bundled with a 65W USB-C charger. The handheld has Hall Effect thumbsticks with customizable light rings, adjustable triggers, customizable back buttons, and a 6-axis gyroscope. It also has a small touchpad on the right. For connectivity, it has Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, dual USB 4.0 Type-C ports, and an audio jack.
