Lenovo Legion 7000K desktop brings high gaming performance but with mobile processors
While laptop CPUs in desktops aren’t new, Lenovo is taking things to the next level. It has launched Legion 7000K in China, but even though it’s a high-performance gaming PC, it doesn’t come with desktop-grade processors. The company has instead packed it with top-end Intel 14th Gen laptop CPUs.
More specifically, the gaming desktop is available with Intel Core i9 14900HX and Core i7 14650HX. This type of hybrid PC has a name, though. They are called Mobile on Desktop (MoDT), and they have the CPU pre-installed with the motherboard, which means the processor is not user upgradable.
Nonetheless, Lenovo has configured the Core i9 14900HX to deliver up to 190W TDP and up to 160W for the Core i7 14650HX. Given that this gaming desktop uses mobile processors, there’s no IHS on the CPU. The company claims that this is an advantage because it eliminates the need for de-lidding, which enthusiasts usually do for better cooling.
Speaking of which, the cooler pre-installed in the Legion 7000K can dissipate up to 190W of power. Lenovo has also shared some Cinebench R23 benchmarks, showing the Intel Core i9 14900HX beating the 14900KF, a proper desktop-grade CPU. The Core i7 14650HX, on the other hand, is shown to beat the 14700F, which is also a desktop-class processor.
Moving towards the GPU, the Core i7 variant of the Lenovo Legion 7000K can be paired with Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Super, 4070 Super, 4060 Ti, and RTX 4060. The last one is the cheapest, coming in at CNY 8,299, around $1,303. As for the Core i9 variant, it can be equipped with the same GPUs as the other one except the RTX 4060. The starting price for this is CNY 1,0499, about $1,494, with the maxed-out variant costing CNY 14,999, around $2,356.
So, even though the Lenovo Legion 7000K comes with laptop-grade CPUs, the price is not on the cheaper end. The company hasn’t said anything about global availability yet, but if it does launch internationally, the pricing could match the Legion Tower 7i Gen 8 (curr. starts at $2,319.99).
