Digital Chat Station has shared new insights into the state of future iPhone camera upgrades, less than six months until Apple introduces the iPhone 17 series. For context, Apple finally brought a periscope zoom camera to a smaller iPhone last year with the release of the iPhone 16 Pro (curr. $831 - renewed on Amazon). On top of that, both the Pro and Pro Max showcased a new 48 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, which replaced a 12 MP alternative Apple had been using since the iPhone 13 series.
According to Digital Chat Station, Apple may eventually go the way of Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi by introducing a 200 MP sensor. For context, Vivo and Xiaomi currently leverage the ISOCELL HP9 as a telephoto camera across several recent flagships. By contrast, Samsung has employed the ISOCELL HP2 inside its Galaxy S Ultra smartphones from the Galaxy S23 Ultra onwards as a 200 MP primary camera.
For the time being, Digital Chat Station believes that Apple is testing a 200 MP sensor as the basis for a new primary camera. It is currently unclear whether Apple is partnering with Samsung or Sony at this stage, though. Likewise, Digital Chat Station has not revealed details about other camera specifications like sensor size or pixel width. Consequently, we suspect that the arrival of this 200 MP sensor is at least a generation away from coming to fruition if not even further, given Digital Chat Station's mention of the rumour being 'super forward-looking'.
