Much to fans’ frustration, the release of GTA 6 was recently delayed from fall 2025 to May 2026. Rockstar cited its high quality standards and a commitment to delivering the most polished experience possible as reasons for the shift. Just as many had come to terms with the new date, a report by Jason Schreier (Paywall) – a respected Bloomberg journalist – has stirred fresh concerns. According to his analysis, Rockstar may be preparing to delay the long-awaited open-world epic once again.
Schreier draws on insights from sources close to Rockstar and reactions from various development studios. In his May 9 report, he stresses that “There’s no guarantee that May 2026 is a sure thing.” According to him, another delay remains entirely possible – and the ongoing uncertainty is already having real-world effects.
GTA 6: The spectre haunting release planning
According to Schreier, one developer behind a major multiplayer title had already postponed its release from fall 2025 to spring 2026 to avoid clashing with GTA 6. Now, that studio is once again facing uncertainty. “The companies are caught in a vice,” Schreier writes, pointing to the tough position many developers find themselves in. If GTA 6 ends up shifting back to fall, games that were already rescheduled could face another round of disruption. Insider Gaming echoes this concern, noting that many studios are watching Rockstar’s planned date with growing skepticism – especially given the company’s history of delays, including with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. If the May 2026 window slips, the crowded fall release schedule could become even more chaotic.
At least Rockstar helped ease the long wait with the release of the second trailer on May 6. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is:
