Huawei has kicked off its new flagship smartphone series, which it has introduced as the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus. Incidentally, the trio have arrived alongside the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design and Mate X6, which we have covered separately.
Like previous Mate series generations, the Mate 70 is the smallest of the three at 160.9 x 75.9 x 7.8 mm and 203 g. However, this still corresponds to a 6.7-inch panel size. By contrast, Huaewi equips the Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus with 6.9-inch displays, which sit within 164.6 x 79.5 mm housings. With that being said, the Mate 70 Pro Plus is a hair thicker and heavier at 8.3 mm and 226 g compared to 8.2 mm and 221 g for the Mate 70 Pro.
All Mate 70 smartphones utilise 120 Hz LTPO AMOLED panels though, as well as 13 MP front-facing cameras with 18 mm equivalent focal lengths. Moreover, Huawei has added ToF cameras for 3D face authentication on the Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus, which results in three cut-outs on these devices. Incidentally, all three Mate 70 models feature side-mounted capacitive fingerprint scanners.
Meanwhile, all Mate 70 series models integrate 50 MP primary cameras with f/1.4-f/4.0 variable apertures and 24 mm equivalent focal lengths. Likewise, all three have the same 40 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with a 13 mm equivalent focal length, a 120˚ FoV and an f/2.2 aperture. However, the Mate 70 contains a different telephoto camera than its Pro siblings. Specifically, while the Mate 70 features a 12 MP and 5x telephoto camera, the Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus rely upon a 48 MP sensor that delivers 3.5x optical zoom instead.
Battery capacities are another area of difference too. In short, the Mate 70 Pro Plus offers the largest capacity of three at 5,700 mAh. The Mate 70 and Mate 70 Pro are no slouches in this regard though at 5,300 mAh and 5,500 mAh, respectively. Also, while the Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus are capable of charging at 80 W wirelessly and 100 W over a wired connection, the Mate 70 makes do with 50 W wireless and 66 W wired charging capabilities.
As usual, Huawei does not mention which chipsets underpin the Mate 70 series. Early information suggests that all three utilise the Kirin 9020 though, which we have covered separately. At this stage, it is unclear whether Huawei intends to release the Mate 70 series globally. For reference, the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro Plus start at CNY 5,499 (~$758), CNY 6,499 (~$896) and CNY 8,499 (~$1,172), respectively.
