Huawei held a virtual product launch today (February 24, 2020) in lieu of its planned pre-MWC press conference. This event saw many new notebooks and other products. It also introduced the MatePad Pro 5G, a new variant of this OEM's flagship tablet.
Deirdre O Donnell,

Huawei promised 5G variants of its premium slate, the MatePad Pro, on its release. Now, the OEM has delivered via its latest virtual launch broadcast from Barcelona, Spain. This device retains pretty much the same specs as its Wi-Fi only or 4G/LTE siblings, its 7250mAh battery capacity included. However, it swaps the Kirin 990 in these tablets for its own 5G-compatible counterpart.

The MatePad Pro 5G also supports the same productivity and sharing software features as its other variants, which include Multi-Screen Collaboration facilitated by Huawei Share. It can also use the stylus and keyboard accessories developed for the pre-existing models.

On the other hand, the new 5G version only comes in 8GB RAM SKUs, whereas the Wi-Fi and LTE versions have a 6GB option. It starts at €799 (~US$867) for a 256GB internal storage model, whereas the LTE alternative of the same specs will be €699 (~$759). The MatePad Pro 5G is also the only variant with a 512GB storage top-end, priced at €949 (US$1030).

These 2 new SKUs will go on sale in China, APAC, the EMEA, Japan, Russia and Latin America from June 2020. The non-5G alternatives, on the other hand, will be available in the same markets (except China, where it is already sold) from April 2020.

PRESS RELEASE

Huawei rethinks creativity with HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G

New flagship tablet delivers powerful productivity and entertainment capabilities in style

BARCELONA, 24 February 2020—Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) today announced the global launch of the new HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G. Representing a breakthrough in design, 5G connectivity, performance and mobile productivity, Huawei once again sets a new bar, delivering a flagship-level 5G tablet experience to consumers.

Featuring a pure and minimalist design that is engineered to impress, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G combines HUAWEI FullView Display with ultra-narrow bezels to achieve the world’s highest tablet screen-to-body ratio at 90 per cent. Powered by Kirin 990 5G flagship SoC with the leading 7nm+ EUV process, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G delivers outstanding 5G connectivity, performance and battery life. Running EMUI10, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G supports Multi-Window[1], Multi-screen Collaboration[2] and HUAWEI APP Multiplier. It also supports the HUAWEI M-Pencil and Smart Magnetic Keyboard, thus driving synergy with PC Mode and new WPS features for maximum productivity. The entertainment experience is made richer with a suite of hardware upgrades, packing immersive audio and display capabilities in a stylish form factor. Additionally, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro series is also the world’s first tablet to support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging[3].

Wang Yinfeng, President of PC and Tablet Product Line, Huawei CBG: “More than just an aesthetic masterpiece or a mobile cinema, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G represents how we at Huawei rethink creativity and mobile productivity. It is an enabler for consumers to express their boundless creativity, and is the perfect device for anyone who is looking for a smarter way to turn ideas into reality.”

Simplicity that belies craftsmanship

Exuding elegance with a unique design and HUAWEI FullView Display that melds technology with style, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G features the world’s highest tablet screen-to-body ratio, at 90 per cent[4], with ultra-narrow 4.9mm[5] bezels surrounding the 10.8-inch 16:10 display. The micro-curved design adopted by the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G ensures a comfortable hold while its magnesium alloy frame keeps the tablet light yet durable. It utilises a unibody design where antennas are embedded into the middle frame and back panel for a clean and minimalist look.

Available in two nature-inspired colourways – Forest Green and Orange – the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G comes in an elegant vegan leather finish. With a texture resembling genuine leather, the vegan leather finish in Forest Green and Orange exudes a unique and irresistible charm.

Rethink performance: Kirin 990 5G

Embedded in the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G is the latest Kirin 990 5G SoC, manufactured with the 7nm+ EUV process to deliver enhanced performance and power efficiency. With a base clock of up to 2.86GHz, the CPU inside adopts an innovative triple-tiered architecture comprising two big cores, two mid cores and four tiny cores. The 16-core Mali-G76 GPU greatly improves performance and battery life for a smooth gaming and entertainment experience. Embedded in the HUAWEI’s first flagship 5G tablet, the Kirin 990 5G SoC supports both non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) architectures and TDD/FDD multi-frequency bands, enabling it to accommodate diverse networks and networking modes for global travellers to enjoy high speed 5G connectivity.

With Huawei’s proprietary Da Vinci NPU architecture, AI computing capabilities are optimised by balancing load between the two big cores and a tiny core. Equipped with up to 8GB LPDDR4X dual-lchannel RAM, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G also launches apps at blazing fast speeds. All this performance is supported by the industry’s first ultra-thick 3D graphene cooling system that synergises with AI for heat management, allowing the tablet to remain cool even when demands are high. This cooling mechanism also benefits other scenarios that typically generate high amounts of heat, such as downloading files on a high speed 5G connection and wireless/reverse wireless charging.

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G delivers excellent battery life thanks to the high-capacity 7250mAh battery and the power-saving features integrated into Kirin 990 5G and EMUI. It supports the 40W HUAWEI SuperCharge, allowing users to charge their tablet extremely quickly. The HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G also supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging[6], providing a convenient and reliable alternative for consumers to keep the tablet, smartphone and other wireless charging-enabled devices powered throughout the day[7].

Rethink intelligence: connectivity

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G introduces a range of revolutionary innovations that fundamentally change the way devices interact with users and with each other. Huawei Share enables Multi-screen Collaboration, which breaks down the barriers between Huawei devices with advanced cross-platform functionality. Developed based on the distributed technology, Multi-screen Collaboration enables drag-and-drop file transfers between smartphones and tablets. Peripheral sharing lets users type on the smartphone using the tablet’s keyboard and screen, play music saved on the smartphone with the tablet’s speakers and more. This solution also makes it possible for the user to pick up calls or respond to text messages directly from the tablet, and use the tablet to simultaneously unlock their smartphone, facilitating a seamless multi-device experience.

Whether users want to chat while shopping online or watch a short video clip while browsing the Internet, Multi-Window[8] enables effortless multitasking with support for up to three apps at once. With Floating Window, users can respond to text messages while gaming or watching a film without minimising the app and breaking out of immersion. Building upon the Android tablet user experience, the new HUAWEI APP Multiplier splits one app instance into two windows, delivering a revolutionary dual-view experience that makes the most out of the landscape orientation. The size of the windows can be adjusted to fit the needs of the user by simply dragging the border.[9] By the end of March 2020, around 3,000 top global apps will support HUAWEI APP Multiplier.

Rethink creativity: a companion for work

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G supports the HUAWEI M-Pencil[10] to deliver a natural and intuitive writing experience, making it an absolute joy to write on glass surfaces. With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt support[11] and a tip made of a unique composite material, users can expect incredible accuracy, responsiveness and sensitivity from the HUAWEI M-Pencil. Placing the HUAWEI M-Pencil on the top of the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G automatically initiates Bluetooth pairing and magnetic charging. The new and improved HUAWEI Notepad and Nebo for HUAWEI natively support HUAWEI M-Pencil to help users capture their inspiration whenever it strikes.

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G supports the Smart Magnetic Keyboard[12] that can be easily connected via Bluetooth. The vegan leather keyboard folio features a 1.3mm key travel distance for comfortable typing while the Shift key doubles as a toggle for Huawei Share, providing quick access to the Multi-screen Collaboration feature.

The all-new PC Mode also supports up to eight concurrently open apps or processes with no impact on performance. In this mode, users can quickly look up the files they need using the powerful search functionality. The improved WPS app adds support for voice note input and smart pencil-brush mode, available globally for enhanced mobile productivity.

Rethink entertainment: mobile cinema

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G comes with a 16:10 IPS panel featuring a 2K QHD (2560×1600) resolution at a pixel density of 280ppi. Capable of fully displaying the DCI-P3 cinematic colour gamut at 540 nits brightness and 1500:1 contrast ratio, the QHD display offers a superior entertainment experience. HUAWEI ClariVu Display Enhancement technology augments the powerful hardware by significantly improving colour reproduction and image clarity, ensuring every frame is sharp and rich with colourful detail.

Delivering an audio experience that rivals that of home theatre setups, HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G supports Histen 6.0 to drive 3D stereo sound effects. The high-amplitude quad-channel stereo quad-speaker tuned by Harman Kardon reproduces even the most intricate sounds with impeccable clarity.

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro is also available alongside HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G. Equipped with the Kirin 990, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro rethinks creativity by delivering outstanding performance across mobile productivity and work scenarios, and supports Multi-screen Collaboration. The HUAWEI MatePad Pro is available in Pearl White, Midnight Grey, Orange and Forest Green.

Deirdre O'Donnell
I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
