Reviews for the Huawei P40
The Huawei P40 belongs to the first generation of Huawei's P series smartphones without Google services. The P40's camera takes very sharp pictures and the high-end smartphone looks very promising in general.
In one area, the dominance is great! We let the current Huawei P40 series compete in a camera comparison. How big are the differences between the two top dogs, the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro? Can the cheapest Huawei P40 Lite surprise positively as it did last year? Our review of the Huawei P40 smartphones will reveal this.

The Huawei P40's hardware is as great as the last few generations of the company's flagship phones, but there are limitations. You don't get wireless charging or a high refresh rate screen by opting for the P40, which a lot of other phones around this price offer. The biggest restriction continues to be the lack of Google Mobile Services that hampers this device as you don't have access to some of the most popular Android applications and services.

The P40 achieves a Video score of 98, thanks to generally accurate exposure indoors and out. Detail is high and noise is well controlled in bright light, though dynamic range is quite limited. The P40 has some issues with color in its videos, with our testers noticing problematic casts and color rendering in some scenes. Stabilization is not particularly effective, with a fair amount of residual motion visible in videos, along with some jello effect. In very low light, noise becomes intrusive, and white balance and autofocus can be inconsistent.

The Huawei P40 accompanied me for a full two months of working from home. Being the primary driver of my day to day work and playing multiple roles, such as the main communicator, camera and entertainment provider, the Huawei P40 fitted seamlessly into my daily life. I had a wonderful experience with the P40, but I must say that it takes time to get used to working without Google Play Services. But once you are over it and used to the new workflow, the Huawei P40 really shines.

The Huawei P40 undercuts the Galaxy S20, despite its higher resolution main camera, and the fact it has more front cameras. But it also loses out on some of the S20-series’ highlights, including wireless charging and a high refresh rate screen. With Huawei still ironing out its Google-free offering, exactly who the P40 appeals to in the west is yet to be seen. But there’s every chance that it could be the best smartphone camera at its price.

Today, most flagship mobile phones are competing for large size and large screens. And there are not many such flagships with one hand. For users who like to hold with one hand, care about lightness and thinness. Pay attention to face value, and like to take pictures. The Huawei P40 with precise positioning and precise pricing is worth experiencing.

Last but not least is the front camera that is just as capable of delivering great pictures. All of the Huawei P40 series devices come with a 32MP front camera and an IR Depth Camera. Moreover, the P40 Pro even has a proximity sensor and an ambient sensor. The 32MP front shooter is far from simple however, as it supports autofocus and 4K video recording too. If that's not quite enough, you can even get some excellent Bokeh shots thanks to the IR Depth Camera.

It's been 3 weeks and counting in this Movement Control Order, and we have been seeing a lot of creative entertainment stuff online. At the same time, we also saw the online launch of the Huawei P40 series in Malaysia which got many Huawei fans excited. As today will be the last day of the pre-order, this is your last chance to own the latest best camera-centric smartphone and pre-order benefits to date.

At the very end of this review we are somewhat conflicted. The P40 is a great smartphone, but as we went along its tiny imperfections piled up until they became one too many. And at the end of the day - €800 is a price too high to pay for this phone.

The Huawei P40 is a lovely, fun little thing, and a charming addition to the line. As with all Huawei phones, it’ll be hampered from an app stability point of view until the brand can completely respond to the catastrophic hand it’s been dealt by the US China trade woes.

The P40 is a great bit of the kit that, although missing out on some of the high-end features of the Pro and Pro+ variants, can still take on most 2020 flagships in terms of photography and raw performance. Whether that makes up for the lack of Google Play is another story altogether, but that'll depend on just how tech-savvy you are.

These software features are presently available out-of-the-box when you purchase a Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, or Huawei P40 Pro+ smartphone. They are a part of the EMUI 10.1 software update, so older Huawei phone models such as the P30 or Mate 30 might have the opportunity to use it after updating their devices. However, Huawei is unable to confirm if older models are fully compatible with AI Remove Passerby or AI Remove Reflection.

To be fair, there are periscope zoom equipped Google Android flagship phones like the excellent Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and the original OPPO 10x lossless Zoom that really work well. The enhanced perisdcope zoom is part of its new 2020 offerings like the Find X2 5G as well.

Overall these phones are pretty much what I'd expect from Huawei -- potentially awesome camera skills, attractive design, 5G, the latest processors and no Google. But how it all comes together in the real world remains to be seen when I put the phones to the test.

That being said, Huawei's HMS efforts are nothing short of impressive and are starting to show great promise. And, despite being a far less universally applicable statement around these parts, there really is a whole vibrant world of Android beyond Google's infrastructure and services. Keeping that in mind, we are sure that the P40 will find popularity in Europe, even if with a limited and specific crowd of buyers.

That said, it’s laying the right foundation - and making hardware that still makes us coo with delight. So if the price is right and the fact it’s Google-light doesn’t put you off, the vanilla P40 could be just the ticket.

It’s been a year now since Huawei had launched its successful P30 series smartphones, and a lot has happened since then. Following a trade-war between the United States and China, Huawei ended up being sanctioned, with the most notable effect being that the company no longer has access to Google’s services. Last autumn, we saw the launch of the Mate 30 series, the company’s first flagship phone to ship without GMS. We had argued that those phones lacked sufficient hardware differentiation to be able to make up for the lack of Google’s services, and it would be some time before we would see Huawei’s own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) mature to a state that represents it being a valid every-day alternative. That goal is inching ever closer as Huawei spends large resources and efforts to get developers onboard its own ecosystem.

The Huawei P40 - on first impressions - seems like a perfectly good piece of hardware. The camera system looks really promising, and the general performance should be really good, but it is placed in an awkward position by a number of factors.

Model:
The Huawei P series, formerly known as the Huawei Ascend-P series, is a line of high-end Android smartphones produced by Huawei. Initially, this series was marketed as part of Huawei’s larger Ascend brand, but it was dropped later. The journey of the P-series started off with the Huawei Ascend P1 in 2012, and it goes up to the upcoming P40 and P40 Pro, becoming better and better. The Huawei P40 sports a glass back and comes with a choice of two finishes, which includes Ice White or Black and Deep-Sea Blue for the glossy finishing, while the matte finishing comes as Silver Frost or Blush Gold. The difference between the finishings has to be the modicum of protection that is offered by the matte finishing against fingerprints and smudges. Apart from that, it also has a large rectangular camera block in its top left corner on the back, a metal frame and an all-screen design, the same as the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro Plus.
In terms of water and dust resistance, the P40 has a lesser IP53 rating as compared to the IP68 certification in both the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro Plus. This simply means that the P40 is less water and dust resistant compared to its sibling models. As far as the display is concerned, the P40 carries a similar display as its predecessor, the P30, with a 6.1-inch screen size, a 1080 x 2340 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. This is not class-leading for the price, as it falls behind the screen of the OnePlus 7T Pro, for instance. One of the differences between the P40 and the P30 has to be the processor. While the latter had a Kirin 980, the former gets the top-end Kirin 990 chipset, similar to the one found in the Mate 30 Pro and the Mate XS. The Kirin 990, teamed with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB/256 GB of storage, has to be the only high-end chipset with integrated 5G. However, there is also an option of the basic Huawei P40 with 6 GB of RAM. The processor is based on 7nm+ manufacturing technology and is definitely fast enough to keep up with the latest flagship phones out there.
The P40 has been equipped with a 3,800mAh battery that should last a full day with moderate to heavy usage. It also supports 22.5W fast wired charging, but there is no wireless charging, which might be a drawback for some users. As far as the camera is concerned, the P40’s Leica-branded camera setup includes a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera capable of 3x optical zoom, just like the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 Plus. However, there are no Google services within this model, they have been replaced by Huawei’s AppGallery. This again might not appeal to some users depending on personal preferences.

ARM Mali-G76 MP16: Integrated graphics card based on the second generation of the Bifrost architecture. Uses 16 of the 20 possible clusters and according to ARM offers twice the performance per cluster than the old Mali-G72. It is used in the Kirin 990 5G and according to Huawei should be about 6% faster and 20% more efficient than a Adreno 640 in a Snapdragon 855.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Kirin 990 5G: ARM based octa-core SoC with 2x Cortex-A76 up to 2.86 GHz (performance), 2x A76 with up to 2.36 (balance) and 4x Cortex-A53 with up to 1.95 GHz (power saving). Integrates a neural processor (2+1 cores), a ARM Mali-G76 MP16 GPU at up to 700 MHz and a Balong 5G modem. Compared to the 4G version, the 5G 990 is slightly higher clocked (2 of the 3 clusters and the GPU). The SoC is manufactured in 7nm at TSMC.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

Only a few smartphones have larger screens.
Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.

Only few smartphones are more lightweight than this.
Huawei: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. is a Chinese company founded in 1987 with focus on telecommunications hardware and 170000 employees. In the first quarter of 2016, Huawei had a market share of 8.2% in the smartphone market, making it the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Compared to the same quarter of 2015, Huawei increased its market share by more than 58%.
In 2014, Huawei created the sub brand Honor and offers certain smartphone series under this name. The name Huawei is usually not listed for these products.
There are a lot of reviews on Huawei phones with slightly above average ratings (as of 2016).
77.03%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
