This may be the hardest conclusion I have ever had to write. Do I recommend the Mate Xs hardware? 100% yes I do. Is the Mate Xs a marvel of engineering showing best in class design and hardware for a foldable phone? Yes, I think it is. Is the camera and performance of the Mate Xs on par with the best Android has to offer in 2020? Yes, yes it does.

With its latest foldable handset, Huawei continues a strategy of practical innovation for solving major phone issues. Phone cameras not getting enough light to get decent pics at night? Develop a giant sensor with light-sensitive yellow pixels like on the P40 Pro series. Bendy phones of the 'in-folding' or clamshell type offering puny external displays, forcing you to open them all too often?

We really enjoyed our time spent with the Huawei Mate Xs. As likely will anyone passionate about smartphones and tech in general. It is just an amazing device that pushes the envelope in more ways than one, offering a glimpse into one potential future for the industry. It's the definition of a "halo product" for both Huawei and folding display tech, not only showcasing what is possible but also pushing it forward and actually getting into the point of relative viability as an end-user product.

The Mate Xs is one of the best implementations of the foldable phone concept and is extremely polished for what it is. Huawei’s expertise in building phones shines in every aspect – from the display, cameras, hardware, and user experience, and while there are certainly some questions about long-term durability, we’re willing to wager this thing would last for quite a bit during normal use.

A foldable phone that expands into a tablet has been thought of as the next form factor for mobile devices. Huawei has thrown conventional design out of the window with Mate Xs by placing the foldable screen on the outside and we think this design makes great sense as you're not stuck with a secondary smaller display. What remains to be seen is if the Mate Xs can prove to be durable enough for the long run. It's a pricey proposition and without Google's framework, it requires you place your faith in Huawei.

On the other hand, even if Huawei launched the Mate Xs to be able to compete with more up-to-date hardware, the handset is still lacking Google Services, which in turn makes the smartphone hard to sell. And once again, Huawei has a great piece of tech, which you can't have outside of China without caveats. But if you don't mind using Huawei Mobile Services, you can get the phone for €2,499 internationally in about a month.

Huawei is known for its excellent engineering, but we’ll have to see whether even its skills are up to the task before them here. Although I'm confident that the Mate Xs will deal with the strains of everyday use better than other foldables, that doesn't necessarily mean it will manage as well as a standard smartphone. The extortionate price means this will not be a phone for the masses, which in a way is good. Most people won't want to do without Google apps.

The Mate Xs is a 5G foldable with insane power, a super camera set-up, and if Huawei’s claims are true, enough juice to last over a day. Arguably there’s no better way to futureproof your pocket, problem is, with no word on pricing or availability will it burn a hole in it?

Unlike the original Mate X, the Mate Xs is a phone made for global audiences. The phone is priced at Euros 2499 (around Php 138K) and will be shipping in Global markets next month. Take note though – Euro pricing is typically higher than local pricing, and the Mate Xs may end up being significantly cheaper if and when it hits our shores.

The Mate XS will receive a global launch (not the US, obviously), which includes select regions throughout Europe. We also know that it doesn’t come with the fancy leather case bundled with the original Mate X. We will be able to buy one separately, however, and something tells me you’ll want to as there’s no way I’d put this thing in my pocket unprotected!

In terms storage configurations, the Mate Xs is fixed at 8 GB RAM and 256GB of storage. According to Huawei Malaysia, the Mate Xs is slated to arrive this coming 20th March 2020 in Malaysia which isn’t too far away. We’ll keep you posted! In my short time with the Mate XS, I thought it was impressive. It’ll be interesting how long the fold lasts, how good the camera is, how long that 4,500mAh battery can survive for, and what apps have been optimized for its expansive 8-inch screen.

The Mate Xs is a marginal improvement on the Mate X we saw last year and is a very expensive device. Even so, it still has a lot of potential and there's no doubt it's an impressive device.

The Mate Xs might be a minor update, but considering we didn’t get a proper European release for the Mate X it doesn’t feel needless. It would have been odd selling last year’s model at a high price with older internals and the improvements to the hinge and display are always going to be welcome. I still have plenty of questions about software and I have yet to really see how apps adapt between folds - this could make or break the Mate.

The Huawei Mate XS is arguably the most satisfying foldable phone that we’ve used. It's going to cost a lot, and it may be a little on the fragile side, but what it lacks in affordability and durability it makes up for in power, features and wow factor.

Model:
It is an undeniable fact to state that there is an increase in demand for foldable phones in the market despite its high price. While there is very limited choice of foldable models to choose from, Huawei Mate XS has made its grand entry into the foldable phones market. Well, first thing first, Mate XS is a slightly updated version of its predecessor, Mate X which debuted last year. However, being a successor alone is not the only mentionable thing about Mate XS because along with a market-shattering price, this model has its very own wow factors which would blow the user’s mind off. When Mate X came into the market with a display which folds on the outside like the first ever folding phone concept, the Royole FlexPai, it definitely managed to attract a lot of attention but sadly, this model was solely sold in China market. Maybe Huawei did notice the frustration among international users on not being able to get a hold on Mate X and subsequently launched the upgraded version, Mate XS to cater for international market.
As far as the design is concerned, the smartphone unfurls rather than folding together like a book which is exactly the same feature as its predecessor. However, this is totally opposite to its competitor, Samsung Galaxy Fold. Those who are quite used to the Galaxy Fold-type folding might find some difficulties to get adjusted with Mate XS. Despite carrying a similar design with Mate X, Huawei claims that there is some improvement done with Mate XS. Such as the ‘Falcon Wing’ hinge which has been incorporated within Mate XS is actually made of more than one hundred interlocking parts along the entire length of the phone. This upgrade will be a big plus point when it comes to improving the overall user experience with the phone. Apart from that, the display crease that exist in Samsung Galaxy Fold is absent in this model due to the choice of placing the display on the outside which is again a rather smart move by Huawei.
In folded position, Mate XS accommodates for a 6.6 inches AMOLED panel display but the real interesting thing about this phone is the experience of using it in its fully opened 8 inches display. The experience is definitely one of a kind for users even for those who are quite used with Mate X. The battery within Mate XS is again the same as the original Mate X which is 4500mAh. The battery capability is enough to support the usage throughout the day without the need for frequent recharging. Even though it has a lot of eye-captivating factors within it, Mate XS do fall back with its lack of Google App and Services. This is definitely a huge frustration for some users, especially those who are regular users of Gmail and Youtube. So, again the choice of owning Mate XS is really a rather subjective choice as it does carry enough plus for its price but there are some disappointments too.
ARM Mali-G76 MP16: Integrated graphics card based on the second generation of the Bifrost architecture. Uses 16 of the 20 possible clusters and according to ARM offers twice the performance per cluster than the old Mali-G72. It is used in the Kirin 990 5G and according to Huawei should be about 6% faster and 20% more efficient than a Adreno 640 in a Snapdragon 855.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Integrates a neural processor (2+1 cores), a ARM Mali-G76 MP16 GPU at up to 700 MHz and a Balong 5G modem. Compared to the 4G version, the 5G 990 is slightly higher clocked (2 of the 3 clusters and the GPU). The SoC is manufactured in 7nm at TSMC.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
