The October-bound Huawei Mate 70 series could debut with an entirely new Kirin SoC. Performance-wise, it scores 1.1 million points in AnTuTu, putting it between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Huawei debuted its new in-house Kirin 9000s SoC alongside the Mate 60 series of smartphones last year. While the Pura 70 Ultra's Kirin 9010 is technically a new chip, it only brings marginal improvements over its last-gen counterpart. A new leak from Weibo (spotted by Huawei Central) says the next-gen Mate 70 series could bring more meaningful upgrades with "two new functionalities".

The yet-to-be-named chip will supposedly score 1.1 million points in an unnamed benchmark, which is very likely AnTuTu. According to AnTuTu's database, that puts it somewhere between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, an impressive leap in performance. Then again, it's best to reserve judgement as some users are often known to make up specs on the fly, as detailed by an earlier Kirin 9010 leak. Plus, the Mate 70 series isn't due to land until October.

Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station also opines the Mate 70 series will launch with a "new platform", calling the Kirin 9010 a "half generation update". This could be referring to SMIC's rumoured 5 nm node. Exactly how SMIC plans to breach the 5 nm barrier without access to ASML's EUV machines is a mystery. The Mate 70 series won't be the only recipient of SMIC's new node, though. Huawei is supposedly developing a laptop chip that trades blows with Apple's M3.
