Reviews for the Huawei Mate 20 Lite
The arrival of the Mate 20 Lite heralds the next generation of Huawei’s elite-performance smartphones. Huawei has equipped the device with the brand-new HiSilicon Kirin 710 SoC, which integrates an ARM Mali-G51 MP4 among other components; we are expecting good things of both chips. Find out in this review whether the Huawei Mate 20 Lite can meet expectations and if the device has any shortcomings.

Archive.org versionIn conclusion, the Mate 20 Lite offers a premium design that disguises its mid-range nature, outstanding battery life, and good photography chops. It packs a punch for its price of £379, and as a mid-range phone that I really enjoyed using (apart from the odd crashing app), I would generally have no hesitation in recommending the Mate 20 Lite.

Archive.org versionAll-in-all, the Mate 20 Lite is a decent mid-range phone retailing for £379. Its design has been brought down from 2018 flagships which makes it look like a top-end phone, and generally there isn’t much wrong with it at this price. It doesn’t seem to offer anything new or radical at this price point, though, and I would expect most people will be just as happy with the Honor 10 or ZenFone 5 – the latter which I think does have the slightly superior camera setup.

Archive.org versionThe tech has promise, I’m hoping it will be better realized when we see the real Mate 20. This isn’t a bad phone, it’s just not a compelling option for the money, given what else is out there right now. The mid-range has become incredibly competitive, and you need to do a lot more to stand out.

Archive.org versionOne look at the Mate 20 Lite's neat and tidy exterior design would suggest it's a great phone. But it's let down by context: the Honor Play is £100 cheaper and that phone is far more powerful and stable. Plus the whole idea of the Mate series is for powerful, top-end devices, thus the Lite is a contradiction to that very premise.

Archive.org versionThe Huawei Mate 20 Lite is a large handset, and that's both a blessing and a curse. The 6.3-inch screen lends itself well to media-rich tasks, but the phone can be tricky to pocket. It has good battery life and a solid chassis, although the glass back does attract fingerprints.

Archive.org versionThe Huawei Mate 20 Lite is a handsome phablet with an attractive and all-encompassing display and some impressive dual-camera tricks. However, its performance is only alright, and there are some tantalizing alternatives for similar or even less money.

Archive.org versionHaving the flagship's name is good and all, but Huawei's priced the Mate 20 lite without accounting for the 'lite' bit too much, and we're not liking the numbers. It's a good overall package, with excellent battery life, decent display and good image quality from its two (real) cameras. But other phones offer those too, some even outperform the Mate in key areas, and often at a lower price. Carrier subsidies could sway things in any direction, but at full retail (north of €400)р we find the Mate 20 tough to recommend.

Archive.org versionThe Mate 20 Lite is a difficult phone to place. It looks attractive enough, if not exactly striking, and offers decent mid-range performance while falling short of the flagship processors found in similarly priced Honor phones.

Archive.org versionA design step up isn't enough when both rivals and rangemates offer better specs for less. A misstep for the Mate sub-brand.

Archive.org versionThe Huawei Mate 20 Lite brings some lovely looks and a great feel in the hand, along with a competent spec list, to the party. However, it's not the most powerful phone from the brand, and looks to make up that deficit mostly through design.

Archive.org versionThe Huawei Mate 20 Lite looks as though it’s crammed full of features and equipped to dish out respectable performance, despite not rocking the newly-unveiled Kirin 980 flagship chipset destined for its more powerful siblings. Pricing places it in a tricky position, though, as it finds itself lodged between more affordable offerings with beefier specs (like the aforementioned Honor Play) and more powerful handsets like the OnePlus 6, which isn’t a huge leap cost-wise.

Archive.org versionThe Huawei Mate 20 Lite will first be available on September 5, but Europeans will have to wait a couple of more weeks. The pricing for the UK is £380, which should translate to €420 on the mainland.

Archive.org versionThe Mate 20 Lite is a conundrum: it's well designed and well built, but only succeeds in getting us excited for the future Mate 20 proper. The Lite is a solid phone, sure, but it's also superfluous...

Archive.org versionThe Huawei Mate 20 Lite will go on sale in the UK for 380 pounds (~$500), starting in October. That’s not exactly cheap, in comparison to devices like the Pocophone F1 or the Honor Play, but Huawei clearly hopes that its brand cachet and AI features will help the Mate 20 Lite stand out in the market.

Archive.org versionThe Lite will cost £379 when it hits shelves, which isn't a bad price for the spec sheet. It is, however, not much less than the OnePlus 6 ($644 at Amazon.com), which at £469 comes with more RAM and a splash-resistant design. I'm looking forward to seeing how these two phones compare in the full review.

Comment
Model: The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is a mid-range phone and a cheaper alternative to Huawei’s Mate 20. Huawei’s big push with the Mate 20 Lite is the fact that it’s an "AI-powered smartphone" like the full-fat Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro, but with a significantly lower price tag. Huawei has continued the design approach it started with the P20 family, with generally pleasing results. The Mate 20 Lite follows the iPhone X way of thinking, with a curvy metal frame sandwiched between twin glass surfaces. It’s much bigger than the iPhone X, and is more like the new iPhone XS Max. The chassis that's barely larger than the 6.3-inch screen, the Mate 20 Lite's screen to body ratio is 81.6 percent. That's a good thing because, at 75.3 mm wide by 158.3 mm deep by 7.6 mm thick, this phone is going to need a pretty large pocket to live in. A user will notice its 172 g weight, too. This 6.3-inch IPS LCD is very easy on the eye, with vivid yet reasonably accurate colors. It doesn’t get eye-searingly bright, but it was plenty bright enough for outdoor usage. A resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels might not sound like much in a 6.3-inch display, but users will not notice distinct pixels at any point. The Mate 20 Lite's display dominates the front of the phone, with a stretched out 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Video content and apps still don’t really make use of this longer form factor, but games will generally fill out.
Huawei is clearly targeting young selfie-takers with the Huawei Mate 20 Lite’s dual selfie cams and gimmicky features. The 20-megapixel sensor on the rear is joined by a 2-megapixel secondary camera for shallow aperture style shots, where the background is blurry. The unit takes lovely images in daylight, and since there’s minimal shutter lag, even with quick-fire multiple exposures – the Huawei Mate 20 Lite’s camera is fun to use. The Huawei Mate 20 Lite has a Kirin 710 processor, a mid-range model with four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53s. As such, it’s more powerful than the Moto G6 Plus but significantly less powerful than the Honor Play. The Huawei Mate 20 Lite runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. That’s no longer the newest version, but Huawei has said that Android 9 will be coming via an update. The Huawei Mate 20 Lite packs a larger-than-average battery to accompany its larger-than-average display. At 3,750 mAh, it’s a fair bit bigger than the 3,000 mAh batteries user tend to get in smaller devices. The Huawei Mate 20 Lite will comfortably get through a full day under most circumstances. As a conclusion, the Mate 20 Lite’s good battery life, a sharp-looking design, and solid camera make it a good buy for those wanting high-end style at a sensible price.
