The Honor Magic V5 performed impressively in our review and also offers some exciting AI features. In addition to image editing and optimisation functions, the foldable device can also be used to turn photos into short videos, based on Google's Veo 2.
Honor's deepfake detection is also on board and supports a wide range of apps, including Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Viber, Telegram, Botim, Line, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and WhatsApp. However, the feature must first be enabled in the settings and is executed on the device.
When translating calls live, users can choose whether to retrieve the necessary data via a cloud connection or store the language models on their device. On-device language AI enables fast, accurate and completely device-based translation of telephone conversations in multiple languages – without using the cloud and thus with improved data protection. The technology drastically reduces the storage requirements of large language models (from 3-4 GB to 800 MB), integrates six language packs (Chinese, English, German, French, Spanish and Italian) directly, and increases translation speed by 38% and accuracy by 16%. Two research papers supporting these advances were recognised at the INTERSPEECH 2025 conference. In everyday use, the translation works very quickly and, at least for simple conversations, reliably.
Another new feature is the ‘Tap Tap’ function. The HONOR Magic V5 integrates the Google Gemini AI assistant directly into the foldable device, offering intelligent real-time functions for productivity and creativity. Users can quickly launch Gemini via the power button or ‘Tap Tap’ function and use it to write, plan, learn, analyse content or interact live. ‘Tap Tap’ also launches Gemini in locked mode when the back of the smartphone is tapped twice.
