While Half-Life 2 RTX gave the classic FPS title a visual upgrade, it kept the game's core mechanics intact. Now, that isn't all bad because the game still holds up in 2025. However, an ambitious modder has decided to take things to the next level.
Dubbed Half-Life 2 Remake, the mod has been in development for a while, with the creator, GameROOSH, posting a video of Half-Life 2's legendary Ravenholm segment a year ago. The modder has posted an update on their Moddb page confirming a playable demo is in the works, and it will launch by 2026. Before that, we could see a remake of Lost Coast, which Valve used as a tech demo for Half-Life 2 before launch.
While the Half-Life 2 Remake isn't as ambitious as Black Mesa-widely considered to be one of the best fan-made games in recent history- it has far fewer resources and no dedicated dev team. It aims to modernise the Half-Life 2 experience in Valve's Source engine, complete with realistic bullet physics and more destructible objects.
