HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1206ng
The HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1206ng is the latest to join the Pavilion Gaming 15 series. This laptop comes with a 15.6-inch display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is worth noting that HP has equipped the Pavilion Gaming with a viewing-angle-stable IPS panel. Therefore, the screen can be read from any position. However, reading the display outdoors is only possible when the sun is not too bright. In terms of the design, HP has opted for a matte black plastic chassis, while the green elements, which include the keyboard backlight, power LED and HP logo on the back, tend to accentuate the overall design. Even though there are no flaws in terms of its build quality, the case does not exactly shine in terms of rigidity. This is due to the fact that both the base unit and the lid can be twisted too easily and too far. Furthermore, there is no maintenance hatch.
As far as connectivity is concerned, this laptop has been equipped with two USB Type-A ports (1x USB 2.0, 1x USB-3.2 Gen 1) and one USB Type-C port (USB-3.2 Gen 1). It should, however, be noted that the latter does not support DisplayPort via USB Type-C. Apart from that, there is also an HDMI port, a headset jack and a gigabit Ethernet port for user convenience. As for SD cards, they can be fully inserted into the card reader which then securely locks them in place. In terms of the keyboard, the keys of the backlit chiclet keyboard offer medium travel and a distinct actuation point. Meanwhile, the multi-touch enabled ClickPad offers good gliding properties with its smooth surface. The touchpad is also sensitive all the way to the edges, while the key travel is shallow with a distinct actuation point.
In terms of its processor, the Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1206ng has been equipped with the Ryzen 5 4600H (Renoir) APU. The CPU part of the APU consists of a hexa-core processor that runs at a base speed of 3 GHz. It should also be noted that an increase of up to 4 GHz is possible via Turbo. Furthermore, simultaneous multithreading (two threads can be processed per core) is also supported. As for the GPU, the laptop carries the GeForce GTX 1650 graphics core, which is based on Nvidia's Turing architecture and belongs to the GPU mid-range. Nvidia specifies a speed level between 1,380 MHz (base) and 1,515 MHz (boost) for this DirectX 12 GPU. It is worth noting that higher clock rates are possible with this GPU if it does not reach a specified temperature and/or energy threshold. In terms of its battery, the laptop carries a 52.5Wh battery which was found to provide excellent battery life for laptop usage. Overall, the laptop has its own plus and minus points to be considered, depending on the need and preference of the users.

The great GPU shortage of 2021 is affecting laptops as well as desktops, but there are still nifty gaming notebooks to be found for under $1,000. The Pavilion 15z-ec200 is an honorable contender, but it'd take a storage and graphics upgrade to make it a winner. If you're in the market for a reasonably priced gaming laptop that can deliver a lively 1080p playing experience, the Acer Nitro 5 and the MSI Bravo 15 are more compelling choices.

When it comes to the visuals, HP definitely takes a different approach from the rest of the field. Instead of the usual Black and Red combination, it pairs the dark color of the body with bright green surrounding the logo, and the same green color printed on the keyboard. However, the build quality is questionable, and we really want to see HP improving this device in 2022. Actually, this is one of the points where the laptop falls behind the competition in this segment. Thankfully, the battery life is decent with 8 hours of Web browsing, or 6 hours and a half of video playback. HP Pavilion Gaming 15 (15-dk2000)’s IPS panel (BOE080D) has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It also covers 90% of the sRGB color gamut. Unfortunately, it uses aggressive, low-frequency PWM for all brightness levels (except for the maximum). On the other hand, our Health-Guard profile completely resolves the issue. What it can’t do, however, is to make the pixel response time faster. Yep, this gaming laptop is equipped with a super slow panel.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 960M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Mobile: Mid range dedicated graphics card for laptops based on the desktop GTX 1660 Ti and therefore the Turing architecture without raytracing and Tensor cores. The performance of the Max-P variant should be similar to an older GTX 1070.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile: Mid range dedicated graphics card for laptops based on the desktop GTX 1650 and therefore the Turing architecture (TU117 chip in 12nm FFN) without raytracing and Tensor cores. Available with 896 and 1024 shaders.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile: Mid range dedicated graphics card for laptops that uses a Turing TU117 chip without raytracing and Tensor cores. Should be slightly faster than a GTX 1650, but is also available in different variants with a TGP ranging from 55 - 80 Watt (and two packages).
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q: Mid range dedicated graphics card for thin and light laptops based on the GTX 1660 Ti with reduced clock speeds and optimized drivers.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 4GB Laptop GPU: Mid-range gaming laptop graphics card based on the Ampere GA107 chip. Offers 2048 shaders and is offered in different TGP (power consumption) variants from 35 to 80 Watt with different clock speeds and therefore performance. Older variant with 4GB VRAM.

AMD Picasso (Ryzen 3000 APU):
R5 3550H: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.1 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1,200 MHz.
R7 3750H: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.3 to 4 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 10 CUs clocked at up to 1400 MHz. The 3750H is the 35 Watt version of the 3700U with the same specs but a higher TDP for better performance under long periods of load.
AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
R5 4600H: Mobile Hexa-Core APU using Zen 2 cores clocked at 3 to 4 GHz and a Vega graphics card with 6 CUs clocked at up to 1500 MHz.
R7 4800H: A laptop-grade octa-core APU with SMT-enabled Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.9 GHz to 4.2 GHz and a Vega series graphics adapter with 7 CUs clocked at up to 1,600 MHz.
Intel Comet Lake:
i7-10750H: A high-performance hexa-core processor designed for use in thicker laptops with room for better thermals. The Comet Lake-H processor is manufactured on the third-gen 14 nm Intel process and features a 24 EU UHD Graphics 630 iGPU clocked at 350 MHz to 1,150 MHz. The CPU cores run at 2.6 GHz (base clock speed) Boosting up to 5.0 GHz and the likely all-core Boost frequency is 4.3 GHz. Hyper-Threading is enabled, allowing two threads to run simultaneously on each core.
AMD Cezanne (Zen 3, Ryzen 5000):
R5 5600H: A mobile Hexa-Core APU with six Zen 3 cores clocked at 3.3 GHz to 4.2 GHz and a Vega iGPU with 7 CUs clocked at up to 1800 MHz.
R7 5800H: A high-performance, laptop-grade, octa-core APU. The Ryzen features eight SMT-enabled Zen 3 cores running at 3.2 GHz to 4.4 GHz along with the Vega 8 graphics adapter that runs at up to 2,000 MHz.
Intel Tiger Lake:
