All in all, the HP Envy 16 is an excellent all-rounder with enough power to handle anything you throw at it. A beefy battery life, powerful processing power, and crystal-clear screen combine to mean it can easily carry you through an entire day of work calls, creative design, and onto an evening of gaming. The HP Envy 16 has all the trappings of a gaming laptop with RTX graphics, a fast CPU, and responsive features to do that – and a whole lot more. If you want a laptop that’s strong enough to take you from work to play, then look no further.

The HP Envy 16 is fast, well-connected and cheaper than rivals, so it’s ideal if you need a content creation laptop on a budget – but if you want a great screen and a slimmer and sturdier design you’ll have to pay more or shop elsewhere.

HP’s Envy line of laptops are designed for users who need a bit more power and performance, including creative professionals like me. The HP Envy Laptop 16 is designed on the Intel EVO platform, which deliver superior performance when you need it most. Big thank you to HP for sponsoring this video

The Envy 16 could have been more powerful, but HP chooses to prioritize comfort once again. Still, the chassis of the laptop gets warm, as the thin profile and the aluminum housing don’t isolate the heat well enough. If you’re not afraid of an extra 100 grams and a thicker device, HP has another offer with the Omen 16. It uses many of the same materials, and the screen is good as well. Most importantly, it offers more performance.

The Dell XPS 15 OLED has earned rave reviews, including ours—and while its screen may be 0.4 inch smaller than the Envy 16's, it's almost a pound lighter. But it's also $2,249 with a slightly slower GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU, a slightly lower-resolution screen, shorter battery life, and an inferior 720p webcam. The HP seen here is $400 less with the HDMI and USB-A ports that the Dell lacks, and its base model is a bargain with an appealing 2.5K, 120Hz display. (Lenovo's Yoga 7i 16 and Dell's Inspiron 16 Plus are worthy competitors, but have no OLED option.)

Overall, the HP Envy 16 is a great laptop with a fantastic display and great power. Just the battery life holds it back from being perfect, and for that, you might want to consider a Spectre, or an HP OMEN gaming laptop instead. The HP Envy 16 packs a lot for creators and the everyday user, too. OLED displays, powerful RTX graphics, Intel H-class processors make it a great buy.

The Envy 16, HP’s elegant and more affordable alternative to their Spectre line, boasts serious performance at fairly price. It has Intel 12th gen H series Alder Lake CPUs and Intel Arc or NVIDIA RTX 3060 GPUs. Our video’s sponsor Trend Micro's Premium Security Suite offers complete device and identity protection for up to 10 devices. The Envy 16 is a traditional clamshell laptop with your choice of 120Hz 2.5K resolution IPS or 4+ OLED displays (both touch and 16:10 aspect ratio). You can get it with Core i5, i7 and i9 processors and it has upgradable RAM and SSDs. The aluminum chassis has convenient legacy ports like USB-A and HDMI in addition to Thunderbolt 4. The Envy 16 is aimed a creators of all kinds who need good displays, dedicated graphics and strong performance in a fairly portable package. It can also handle light to moderate gaming.

I didn’t get to spend much time with the HP Envy 16-inch, but I liked what I saw. The large screen made it easy to fit multiple tabs on the screen – ideal for productivity – and the screen itself appeared bright and vibrant, which would be great for watching media. The large size and weight may discourage people from using this device as a hybrid working laptop, although I’d recommend that anyone who needs a powerful device for content creation or productivity consider the HP Envy 16-inch.

The Envy is getting bigger, but does that make it a better system? The faster performance comes at the cost of a heavier design when compared to its 15.6-inch Envy 15 predecessor.

The HP Envy 16 packs all kinds of power and performed swimmingly on most of our tests, even when it came to playing video games. As long as you expect some fan noise and know that your games won’t run well at 4K — which shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone who plays video games on a laptop — the Envy 16 is perfect for casual gaming. If you want a stronger gaming laptop, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 has a slight edge on the Envy 16. If you don’t play games at all, the Envy 16 shines in all other performance aspects, making it the perfect companion for professional or personal use. If you’re watching anything on YouTube or Netflix, you can expect bright, vivid colors that enhance the whole experience. And if you’re simply browsing the web, checking emails, or typing up a school paper, you’ll find practically zero lag and smooth sailing overall.

As configured, our loaded HP Envy 16 test system provides ample power for content creators. However, at a price well over $2,000, it begins to feel as though we’ve left HP’s midrange Envy territory and entered the realm of the company’s high-end Spectre line. There isn’t anything about the Envy 16’s look that’s outright objectionable, but the sum total feels a bit disappointing given the price. The chassis is heavy, the low-contrast keyboard is annoying, and the overall plain silver look is a bit boring. Plus, the drop-jaw USB-A port is a pointless inclusion. While we applaud HP’s wide-ranging configuration options for the Envy 16, we’d still steer creative pros to one of our two favorite content-creation laptops, the Dell XPS 17 or the Asus VivoBook Pro 16X OLED.

Between the gorgeous 16-inch 4K OLED screening and powerful specs, the HP Envy 16 should appeal to content curators who enjoy gaming occasionally. Potential buyers who can get past the underwhelming battery life may also find a laptop that excels at general computing tasks from video conferencing to media consumption.

HP’s Envy line lands in a unique space. These are premium laptops through and through, and often have the performance to back that up for content creators. However, they aren’t as expensive as machines like the MSI Creator Z16P or the 16-inch MacBook Pro. A case in point is the new HP Envy 16, the replacement for the Envy 15, a laptop that’s been on our list of best 15-inch laptops and best video-editing laptops. Given its strong performance and solid build quality, the Envy 16 is an even more compelling entry than its predecessor.

What became clear in the review of the HP Envy 16 laptop is that you are dealing with a powerful product. A product that is great for office work and activities that require heavy processing. The high-quality display has made this product suitable for activities other than gaming, such as video and photo editing. The powerful hardware has also made it possible for you to use this product for gaming. The reasonable weight has also made it possible for you to easily carry this laptop. The attractive appearance has also made ENVY 16 H1023 great for meetings and presentations. If you need a gaming laptop that is not very obvious from its body and design that it is gaming, the HP Envy 16 is a good choice.

We can't fault the 2023 HP Envy 16 for being behind the silicon times, not with a screaming 13th Gen Intel Core i9 and Nvidia's revved-up GeForce RTX 4060. Plus, the step up to a 120Hz display turns what was already a first-class creative laptop into a credible entry-level gaming rig. But we wish it weighed less, and if we were configuring one we'd step down to a Core i7 CPU and splurge on the optional OLED panel. That, we think, would be a better match for the dominant Dell XPS 15.

If you’re primarily a basic productivity user, then you won’t find much difference between the 2022 and 2023 HP Envy 16. However, if you’re a creator or gamer, then the updated CPU and GPU provide meaningful improvements in performance. The Envy 16 lives up to its promise as a reasonably priced laptop that can meet the needs of those two user groups. However, you’ll want to spend more money and upgrade to the OLED display if you’re a creative type who craves wide colors.

The latest 16-inch Envy gets the x360 treatment to be an effective midrange solution in between the Pavilion x360 15 and Spectre x360 16. It comes in both Intel and AMD variants to satisfy users on both sides of the pond.

The HP Envy x360 16 (2024) is priced well for an upper-mid-tier device with a gorgeous display and solid performance. Creators will love this laptop's flexible form factor and impressive battery life. After using it for a few weeks, I can say that it's my favorite big-screen 2-in-1, despite its quirks. This is a laptop for work as much as it is for entertainment, and if you're looking for a 2-in-1 laptop, you have to consider the Envy x360. Compared to its rivals, HP's model offers a more complete package. Take a look at Lenovo's Yoga 7i. It's also a great machine worth consideration, but the Yoga is heavier with a duller screen.

The HP Elitebook x360 is easy to recommend for business users, particularly those who can buy the laptop in bulk, as it's fairly pricey at a starting rate of $2,029. My review unit costs $2,299. Again, this is not meant for the everyday consumer, but I recommend it to enterprising users and folks who want a durable, secure, and reliable laptop for work. For more traditional users, I'd recommend the Acer Swift 14, which fields a similar display size, battery life, and performance but at a more affordable price.

The HP Envy x360 strikes a great balance between a polished design and an attractive price. It packs a high-performance processor into its relatively slim chassis, an uncommon choice in a sea of high efficiency processors like the Ryzen 7 U-series processors. Add in the Envy x360’s beautiful OLED display and you get a 2-in-1 laptop that’s a steal for under a thousand dollars. Unfortunately, you will have to accept the Envy x360’s lackluster battery life of just over 6 hours. Among 2-in-1s, the HP Pavilion Plus 16, Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i, and Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 have it beat, and if you’re open to considering traditional laptops the Acer Swift X 14 and LG Gram 17 have phenomenal battery life. While the Envy x360 isn’t the perfect laptop, it’s a well-built, reliable, fast machine with an incredible user experience. You can’t find a more powerful 2-in-1 at this price without making other compromises.

Another missing item from the Envy is speedy USB connectivity. There's no Thunderbolt 4 because of the AMD processor (it's a licensing issue), but you also don't get USB4; either would give you fast 40Gbps transfer speeds. Instead, you get a pair of 10Gbps USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports. The Envy x360 16 does have two USB-A ports at least, so you don't need to carry around a USB adapter. When it's discounted to $1,000, which is with great frequency, the HP Envy x360 16 is a steal, providing a much better display than most laptops at that price. With its strong performance for general use and a long-lasting battery, this convertible is easy to recommend for home use or remote work. It's probably only two speakers away from earning an Editors' Choice award. With fuller audio output, the Envy x360 16 would be about the perfect $1,000 home entertainment convertible.

The 8840HS isn't actually a new chip; instead, it's similar to the Ryzen 7 7840U but with a 5 W higher minimum TDP as well as higher clock speeds on the Ryzen AI NPU. The 8840HS has 8 SMT-enabled cores (16 threads) running at 3.3 GHz to 5.1 GHz. Those Zen 4 architecture cores are mated to the Radeon 780M integrated graphics adapter.
