The new EliteBook X Flip G1i is one of the most rounded compact business laptops currently on the market. Strong points include the excellent webcam, trio of USB-C ports, long battery life, impressively engineered keyboard and touchpad and the bright non-reflective IPS display. The only failing worth mentioning is the slow SSD write speeds, but the average user is unlikely to notice that. At under £1,700, it’s good value too when compared to the Dell Pro 13 Premium, which is the most obvious competitor we’ve tested recently.

When you’re paying nearly $3,000 for specs you might expect to find in a $1,000 laptop, you probably should expect that the system will pull out all the stops and make the most of what it packs in. While the HP EliteBook X Flip G1i performs decently, it still lags behind substantially cheaper systems in many key areas. I love the display, 1200p and bezel-flanked though it may be. But a screen alone won’t save this system from being tough to recommend. If it were hugely discounted, I’d hop on it, but as long as the Yoga 9i and ProArt PX13 are cheaper, they’ll make far more sensible buys for folks who don’t need the enterprise extras but need more performance or way more performance (at the cost of battery life), respectively.

Imagine you are the CEO of a company and searching for a laptop? A lightweight design for easy travel with premium looks, a bright and vibrant display, the power to run everyday apps and legacy programmes, long battery life, an excellent webcam for video calls, and strong security to keep sensitive information private. If I told you that the HP EliteBook X Flip G1i 14 meets all these criteria, it might change how you imagine a business notebook. After using the EliteBook X Flip G1i 14 for the past few days, I felt it was truly ‘CEO material’ — it has everything a high-flying business executive could wish for. Here’s my review.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Arc 140V: A pretty fast integrated graphics adapter that higher-end Intel Lunar Lake family processors employ. This is a direct successor to the Arc 8; it can drive three SUHD 4320p monitors simultaneously via HDMI 2.1, eDP 1.5 and DP 2.1. With the 140V, all 2023 and 2024 games are playable at 1080p on low graphics settings.

Intel Lunar Lake:

Core Ultra 7 258V: An upper mid-range Lunar Lake family processor. It sports 4 new Skymont E-cores and 4 new Lion Cove P-cores running at up to 3.7 GHz and 4.8 GHz respectively, along with the new Arc 140V iGPU and 32 GB of on-package LPDDR5x-8533 RAM. It essentially matches the Core Ultra 7 165U and Core i7-1360P in multi-thread performance and it eats up to 37 W when under short-term workloads.

Core Ultra 7 268V: A higher-end Lunar Lake family processor. It sports 4 new Skymont E-cores and 4 new Lion Cove P-cores running at up to 3.7 GHz and 5.0 GHz respectively, along with the new Arc 140V iGPU and 32 GB of on-package LPDDR5x-8533 RAM. It should be about as fast as the Core Ultra 7 165U and Core i7-1360P in multi-threaded workloads and it eats up to 37 W when under short-term workloads.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact. 

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
