Google released Android 16 as a stable software update earlier this week to Pixel smartphones across the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series. Nonetheless, the company has already moved on to QPR1 Beta 2, having distributed Beta 1.1 about a week ago. For context, Android 16 QPR1 is unlikely to reach stable status until September at the earliest.
In the meantime, QPR1 Beta 2 offers a few insights into what is coming down the pipe, including an increasing Material 3 Expressive usage across the Pixel Launcher and the Pixel Settings menu. The new beta also introduces Google's long-rumoured desktop mode. Serving as an alternative to Motorola Ready For and Samsung DeX, the new desktop mode can be activated on any Pixel that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode via its USB Type-C port. Thus, all Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 devices should be compatible, including the Pixel 8a (curr. $288 - refurbished on Amazon).
Based on the videos embedded below, Google's long-awaited desktop mode appears to be fairly robust even at this early stage. For instance, Google has implemented multiple desktops like a desktop operating system, as well as resizeable windows and window pinning. For reference, you can enable Google's new desktop mode by enabling Developer options and then selecting 'Desktop experience features'. Please see the videos below for more details.
