Google has been gradually adding back features to its Pixel smartphones in recent years that it offered on the Pixel 4 series. For instance, it is now possible to use Face Unlock even with Pixel a series models like this year's Pixel 9a (curr. $449 on Amazon). While Google no longer leverages Project Soli, which it later branded as Motion Sense for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, all Pixel 5 and Pixel 6 series missed out on face unlock functionality altogether.
Now, Android Authority claims to have received exclusive information about another feature that was last seen in the Pixel universe on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XLL. Although some Pixel fans may clamour for the return of 3D face unlock and Active Edge, Android Authority reports that Google has decided to bring back Ambient EQ instead. For reference, despite being available on the Pixel Tablet, no Pixel smartphone since Google's Pixel 4 flagships have supported Ambient EQ.
Citing an anonymous Googler, Android Authority adds that Google will re-branded Ambient EQ as Adaptive tone, presumably to better describe the feature. Apparently, Adaptive tone will only be possible thanks to ams TMD3743, a new ambient light and colour sensor that will feature on all Pixel 10 models apart from the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. As a result, it seems unlikely that Google will entertain bringing Ambient tone to older Pixels. Currently, Google is now expected to unveil the Pixel 10 series on August 20. In the meantime, colour options for all models have leaked, as have pictures of the Pixel 10 Pro.
