Google Shopping is getting major AI updates. This will enable a number of new functions, including the virtual try-on of garments. However, this currently only works in the US.

Google I/O 2025 was all about artificial intelligence. Gemini is gradually making its way into all apps and services offered by the software giant. This includes Google Shopping, which, according to Google, offers over 50 billion products ranging from local retailers to shipping giants.

How it works

The function is currently only available in the US, but is nevertheless an impressive demonstration of where things are headed. Users first have to register with Search Labs, select their favourite clothes and click on "Try on". In doing so, users have to upload a full-body photo of themselves before Gemini AI can showcase how selected items of clothing look when "worn". According to Google, billions of items of clothing are available to try on. Those wanting a second opinion can also save the AI-generated image of selected clothing and forward it directly to family and friends.

Google Shopping also plans to offer the best price using AI

Another feature is the "Track Price" function, which is similar to price comparison portals and also includes local retailers. As usual, users receive a notification when their desired price has been reached. Moreover, the AI is designed to cater very specifically to the needs of users in their searches. For example, if you are looking for a bag for a trip to a specific location, Gemini will determine what kind of material it should be for your destination, e.g., waterproof if you are traveling to London. This is intended to save users the trouble of researching themselves. These AI-based features are expected to be introduced in the US soon.
