It is no secret that Google is finally bringing a telephoto camera to its entry-level flagship smartphone this year with the release of the Pixel 10 series. Officially, Google has not confirmed anything yet. However, it has already been spotted filming a Pixel 10 commercial with a third rear-facing camera in shot.
According to Android Headlines, the addition of a telephoto camera across the entire Pixel 10 range will coincide with improved macro photography capabilities. Apparently, Google will achieve this by integrating a tele-macro mode within the Pixel Camera app. While its rivals have offered this feature for years, Google has persisted with bringing macro functionality via a Pixel's ultra-wide-angle camera.
Surprisingly, Android Authority insists that Google will not be removing its existing ultra-wide-angle macro mode. Instead, Pixel 10 smartphones will still use their ultra-wide-angle cameras when a subject is too close for the minimum focusing distance of their telephoto cameras. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether Google will bring tele-macro functionality to its existing models that already have 5x telephoto cameras like the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL (curr. $899 on Amazon).
