GoPro Hero 9 Black leaked marketing assets confirm 20 MP camera and a larger battery for Hero 8 Black successor
Yet more details about the GoPro Hero 9 Black have leaked online, courtesy of Roland Quandt and WinFuture. Previously, marketing renders had been presented, as had what appeared to be retail packaging of the upcoming action camera. While we could not vouch for the authenticity of the latter, the new images published by Quandt and WinFuture do. However, these new images show even more of the retail packaging, which confirms another change that GoPro has made for this year's Hero camera.
Not only has GoPro enabled 5K/30 FPS recording on the GoPro Hero 9 Black, but it has also equipped the camera with a 20 MP camera sensor, an upgrade from the 12 MP sensor in last year's Hero 8 Black. This switch gives the Hero a higher-resolution camera than the GoPro Max, which has an 18 MP sensor. GoPro has only certified one camera with the FCC this year, so it seems unlikely that the company will release a successor to the Max this year.
Additionally, GoPro has upped the battery capacity of its new action camera from the 1,220 mAh cell that includes in the Hero 8 Black. According to Quandt and WinFuture, the Hero 9 Black will have a 1,720 mAh battery, a 41% increase on the size of the battery in last year's model. The Hero 9 Black will remain compatible with accessories for the Hero 8 Black, but GoPro will release a dual-charging dock to accommodate the new camera's larger battery. If you do not own any recent GoPro Hero accessories, then a new Media Mod and other accessories are on their way too. There is still no word on a release date yet, though.
