The new 15.6-inch Aero 15 X is launching October 2nd with a primary 512 GB SSD for a starting price of $2200 USD.

Gigabyte's super-popular Aero 15 series is about to get even more powerful with the upcoming refresh. Called the Aero 15 X, the system will largely be an internal update alongside more minor superficial color changes.

Firstly, the most important upgrade will come from swapping out the GTX 1060 on the original Aero 15 with the GTX 1070 Max-Q. If assuming no behind-the-scenes underclocking witchery, this change alone should bring an impressive 40 percent boost in raw GPU performance without necessarily having to increase fan speed. This would put the new Aero 15 X in the same category as the Asus Zephyrus GX501, MSI GS63VR, and Eurocom Q5 in terms of gaming potential.

Beyond the GPU change, the 15 X will be dropping the bright Green and Orange color options from the original Aero 15 for a simpler matte black look. Gigabyte wants to make it clear that the Aero 15 X is in no way replacing the existing Aero 15 SKUs and that all will continue to be available. Core specifications are otherwise identical and we highly recommend checking out our existing review on the Aero 15 for more information on the Pantone-certified display, connectivity features, and dimensions.

It's not surprising that Gigabyte will be expanding its successful Aero family with more powerful SKUs, but the addition of a Max-Q GPU option seems to be at odds with the target audience. The manufacturer never marketed the Aero series specifically for gamers and yet the addition of an even faster graphics option will surely cause some confusion as to what market the Aero 15 X is catering to. Nonetheless, graphic artists are sure to love both the pre-calibrated display and higher GPU horsepower when compared to weaker alternatives like the XPS 15 9560.

Expect our full review on the Aero 15 X in the coming weeks. There is no word yet on when or if we will see an update to the smaller Aero 14 lineup.
