Valheim, a massively popular open-world survival game, has reached a record-low price, with a Humble Bundle deal cutting the price of the sandbox game by a massive 50%. The survival-craft game still attracts over 30,000 players a day, despite launching almost five years ago.

Valheim launched into Steam Early Access over four years ago, making waves in the survival-craft genre for its challenging combat and survival mechanics, outstanding soundtrack, and Viking-age setting. Despite Valheim's long lifespan, it has managed to retain a substantial player base, especially for a paid game. Now, in a Humble Bundle deal, Valheim has dropped to just $9.99, which is a substantial 50% discount off the regular price of $19.99.

Valheim gameplay and reviews

The main goals of Valheim are exploration, resource gathering and management, and base building, however, much of the excitement about the survival-craft game comes from its multiplayer gameplay, which features both a co-op PvE mode and a more recently added PvP mode. For the most part, Valheim focusses on single-player and co-op PvE gaming, making it a fun game to play with a group of friends, since you can all join in on the fun when possible or sit out a round when it's not convenient. The multi-player gameplay can handle as may as 10 players on a player-hosted dedicated server, and players can cooperate to gather resources, craft weapons, build shelter, explore the surrounding world, and get into trouble in challenging boss fights.

Valheim offers players a lot of freedom, with everything from sailing and cooking to an in-depth building system that allows for a lot of flexibility in constructing and decorating your shelter and your village. Your settlement can also be as big or small as you choose, and you can set up multiple villages or outposts as you explore the procedurally-generated Viking-inspired world. The world features a number of different biomes, from the lush Black Forest and mountainous Mistlands to the charred and fiery Ashlands, and each biome has a selection of resources and diverse wildlife that can be both hostile or indifferent towards players.

Players on Steam praise Valheim for its solo gameplay loop, challenging combat, and simple, but somewhat relaxing or cathartic feel. Not everything is positive, though, and there are complaints about late-game grind and a general steep learning curve. Despite still being in early access on Steam and launching over four years ago, Valheim still manages to hold on to a decent-sized audience, so the good seems to outweigh the bad for many people.

Valheim also features relatively moderate minimum system requirements, making it an ideal game for those on gaming handhelds, like the Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go (curr. $699.99 from Lenovo US)

The Humble Bundle deal will be discounting Steam keys for Valheim for the next eight days, and it's well worth checking out the game as long as the game is available for $9.99.
