Outlast, a critically acclaimed survival horror game, has been heavily discounted on GOG. Its DLC, Whistleblower, has also received a similar price cut.

Even though it had a Metacritic score of 80 when it launched in 2013, Outlast was well received by players, with over 90,000 positive reviews on Steam. Back then, the survival horror genre was dominated by the likes of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and there are clear parallels between the two. Outlast is as gory as they come and contains disturbing visuals, so you're better off playing it away from prying eyes.

In Outlast, you play as Miles Upshur, an investigative journalist who finds himself at the Mount Massive Asylum that was recently being used by the Murkoff Corporation for ethically sketchy experiments. The game drops you off at the gate with nothing but your camera, which will be your only companion throughout the game.

Immediately after you get inside, you begin to sense something awry. In true survival horror game fashion, there are no weapons, so your only choice is to evade danger whenever it pops up, and that's pretty frequent. Many parts of the asylum are pitch-black, and the only way to navigate through them requires you to switch on night vision on the camera.

In terms of resources, the only one to look out for is batteries. Every time you record events or use night vision, your battery drains. At easier difficulties, this isn't a problem because there are plenty of batteries strewn about. Outlast isn't very long in terms of gameplay, but you will die a couple of times trying to figure out how to outmanoeuvre enemies. And add a few minutes here and there to recover from the dozens of jump scares the game throws at you.

Whistleblower is the only piece of DLC ever developed for Outlast. It tells us the story of the Murkoff employee who sent Miles the tip that sets off the events of the original game. Whistleblower takes the brutality to another level and must be experienced at least once, that is, if you can stomach it.

Outlast can now be bought on GOG for just $2.99 and Outlast Whistleblower for $1.34. The deal is applicable for only the next two days as a limited-time promotion. System requirements shouldn't be a problem because even at launch, it didn't demand much.
