Garmin has returned with another update for its Instinct 3 smartwatch series. Also available on the cheaper Instinct E (curr. $249.99 on Amazon), the update does not move either onto a new development period. Instead, Garmin has revisited v9.xx software again.
As a result, this is the second time that the company has announced the conclusion of its v9.xx beta period before then releasing a v9.xx beta update. To recap, Garmin started rolling out Beta Version 9.21 in late May with the promise of fixes for issues that were causing GPS activity crashes in some instances. While that build transitioned to Garmin's stable software branch with the release of Software Version 9.21, it is now offering v9.21 for beta testers.
This time, Garmin claims that earlier software shipped with an issue that could result in an Instinct E or Instinct 3 enabling critical battery mode regardless of their battery level. Unfortunately, the company has not confirmed in which software version this bug started reaching Instinct E and Instinct 3 owners.
Nonetheless, Beta Version 9.22 is said to resolve this bug, which can be pulled from Garmin's servers by navigating through Menu, System, Software Update and then tapping 'Check for Updates' when your smartwatch is in Bluetooth range of your paired smartphone. Given the issues that this bug could cause for Instinct E and Instinct 3 owners, we suspect Garmin will move v9.22 onto its stable software branch by next week at the latest unless it finds any fresh bugs in the meantime.
