The Forerunner 970 has received another stable update.
Garmin has introduced a major new software update for two of its most recent Forerunner smartwatches. Available worldwide as a free update, the new stable software boasts over a dozen changes from previous releases, including four new features.

Garmin has updated the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 with a new stable software release. To recap, the company introduced Software Version 17.33 for the pair in late May. Since then, it has been offering multiple v18.xx builds to public beta testers.

As we discussed at the time, Software Version 17.33 update was said to finalise v17.x beta development. However, successive interim updates arrived to address bugs missed during beta testing, culminating in the release of Software Version 17.39 late last month. Now, Garmin hopes to have finished its latest development cycle with the release of Software 18.29 for smartwatches running stable software.

A major update, Software Version 18.29 introduces over a dozen changes to both the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 (curr. $749 on Amazon). Specifically, the new update adds four new features, including the option of using the voice command feature with the 'Ok, Garmin' wake word. Additionally, Garmin has bundled ten bug fixes, the full list of which we have included below.

Moreover, Software Version 18.29 contains updated translations, improved flashlight behaviour and a refined touch lock experience, for a total of seventeen changes from 17.xx software. Garmin reports that 20% of Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 smartwatches should have already received a notification to download Software Version 18.29. If that is not the case, then you can manually trigger a new download by navigating through the main menu to Settings, System and Software Update before selecting 'Check for Updates'.
