The Suunto Run 2 is here, and it’s giving the Garmin Forerunner 570 a run for its money, as Suunto offers offline navigation, no subscription required. The new model features significant upgrades to the display, storage, GPS accuracy, and battery life.

The Suunto Run 2 is positioned as a mid-range running smartwatch, but it is said to offer far better features than its direct predecessor ($179 on Amazon). Suunto sticks with a relatively simple design – the smartwatch, with a diameter of 46 millimeters and a thickness of 11.7 millimeters, is mostly made of plastic but features a stainless steel bezel and Gorilla Glass protecting the display.

The watch weighs just 35 grams and is water-resistant up to 5 ATM, so it can also be worn while swimming. The round 1.32-inch AMOLED display, with its 466 x 466 pixels, reaches a brightness of 2,000 nits, up from the 600 nits of the previous model. The battery capacity has increased to 380 mAh and promises a battery life of ten days with normal use. The storage capacity, at least in one version of the smartwatch, has been expanded from 4 GB to 64 GB, allowing far more music and apps to be stored directly on the watch.

Another new feature is the ability to save maps offline directly on the smartwatch and navigate precisely in conjunction with the improved GPS module. The improved heart rate sensor collects data around the clock. The Suunto Run 2 supports 32 sport modes, sleep tracking, and records steps taken as well as active calories burned. However, Suunto has omitted an NFC chip for contactless payments.

Pricing and availability

The Suunto Run 2 is available now, either with 4 GB of storage for $349, or with 64 GB of storage for $399. More details about the running smartwatch can be found on the official product page.
