The Garmin Fenix 6 smartwatch has been included in a recent study to determine the relative accuracy of heart rate measurements across various devices. Also included in the experiment were the Polar H10 chest strap and a new military-grade sensor called OMNI. The research flagged problems with data collected by the Garmin wearable.

A new study has compared the accuracy of heart rate measurements of the Garmin Fenix 6 smartwatch and the Polar H10 chest strap. The study, which tested sensors in various chest- and wrist-based devices, was published in BMJ Military Health, a military medicine journal. As one might have expected, the chest straps were shown to be more accurate than the smartwatch and wristband monitors.

The study involved 54 men and women who were randomly assigned a chest-based monitor; the models included the new military-grade OMNI, Polar H10, Equivital EQ-02 or Zephyr Bioharness 3. Each participant was also asked to wear the Garmin Fenix 6 and Empactica E4 PPG devices while undertaking a submaximal exercise test. Bland-Altman analyses of agreement (below), shared by X (formerly Twitter) user @DrSianAllen, demonstrate the enhanced accuracy of the chest-based ECG monitors at a range of exercise intensities, showing the OMNI as equal to or better than the other gadgets.

The researchers also concluded that the wrist-based gadgets, including the Garmin Fenix 6, underestimated heart rate during low-intensity exercise and overestimated measurements during high-intensity activities. It appears that the study was undertaken to assess the accuracy of the OMNI monitor, which was designed for military use with additional features like long-range secure data transmission.
