Fitbit smartwatch users will be affected by a potentially very unpleasant change that could significantly limit the functionality of the wearables. Google is justifying the step with regulatory requirements.

Fitbit users will have to make do with a significant limitation on the functionality of their wearables. Specifically, Google has announced that it will remove third-party apps and watch faces from the Fitbit app gallery in June 2024, justifying this step with the impact of new regulatory requirements. Google does not provide a detailed explanation, but will most likely refer to the Digital Markets Act in future statements. The change only affects users in the European Economic Area. It remains unclear whether and how users can circumvent this restriction, such as by providing a different location.

Users of a Fitbit Sense 2, Fitbit Sense, Fitbit Versa 4, Fitbit Versa 3, Fitbit Versa 2, Fitbit Versa Lite, Fitbit Versa and the Fitbit Ionic are affected, although the latter was recalled in 2022 for safety reasons (i.e. issues of battery overheating). According to Google, third-party apps can still be downloaded and installed until June 2024. Access to a selection of Fitbit and Google apps will still be possible after this date, but Google does not provide an exact statement on the usability of third-party apps and watch faces downloaded before the deadline.

The Fitbit app gallery currently contains various smaller video games and training apps from third-party providers, as well as news apps and basic tools such as calculators. This move from Google is a further sign that the company is no longer treating Fitbit smartwatches as a top priority.
