Finally gone: Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra to remove one of most hated Galaxy S26 Ultra back camera aspects

It seems Samsung has finally had enough of fans calling for the upgrade of the aging 3x telephoto camera, and it is expected to shake things up in the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Truth be told, the 3x telephoto has been long overdue for an upgrade. Samsung has kept the 3x telephoto shooter of the Galaxy S26 Ultra relatively unchanged for several generations now.
In fact, the Galaxy S22 Ultra packs a larger 10 MP 1/3.52-inch 3x telephoto sensor than the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 1/3.94-inch 10 MP sensor.
However, and to the dismay of many, there is unlikely to be a new 3x telephoto shooter on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Leaker Ice Universe reports that Samsung is removing the 3x telephoto camera altogether from the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Instead, the Galaxy S27 Ultra will rely on the new 200 MP main camera for digital 3x zoom. We don’t know how we feel about this, as optical zoom is almost always better than a digital crop.
That said, the 3x digital zoom from the main camera might not be bad at all. We’ve previously reported that the Galaxy S27 Ultra could bring a 200 MP ISOCELL HPA main camera sensor with a 1/1.12-inch or 1/1.3-inch sensor size. This would put the Galaxy S27 Ultra’s main camera in the same hardware league as the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and the Vivo X300 Ultra, both of which also carry 200 MP 1/1.12-inch main cameras.
Interestingly, this comes a day after Ice Universe posted a render of the Galaxy S27 Ultra, asking for opinions from the community about the design. The render also had three cameras on the back. So, this makes us think that Ice Universe’s Galaxy S27 Ultra render could be more than just a mere fan-made image.
These are still early days for leaks concerning the Galaxy S27 Ultra. So, take things like the design and camera configuration with a giant grain of salt.
