As mobile CPUs get more and more power efficient with each yearly iteration, the need for elaborate cooling solutions decreases, especially for mini PC models that are equipped with mid-range processors. Intel’s Meteor Lake-H family has been around for almost 2 years now, and initially, it required the usual cooling fans. In the meantime, mini PC producers from China figured that these processors can work with no active cooling if the chassis is slightly bigger, and, of course, equipped with sizable passive designs. One recent example for such an approach is now available on Amazon with a plethora of configurations and impressive port selection.
While the excessive heatwaves recorded in the past few years as a result of the global warming might cast a shadow over the fanless mini PC designs, the models from the rather generic Chinese company named UDPTCP at least offer an unusually large number of connectors, making these mini PCs ideal for a home lab. This system is rated to withstand temperatures between 0-60° C and up to 95% ambient humidity.
Amazon is offering the barebones kit for $559, but there are quite a few RAM+SSD options, of which the 32 GB RAM + 1 TB SSD seems to be offering the best value at $749.99.
Even though the motherboard supports DDR5-5600, the top configuration on Amazon offers only DDR5-4800 RAM. The 1 TB SSD is connected to a PCIe 4.0 X4 slot and all the configurations are powered by the Core Ultra 7 155H, which is still a capable mid-range mobile processor integrating a decent Arc iGPU with 8 Xe cores. Due to its slightly bigger dimensions, the motherboard includes a PCIe 4.0 x8 expansion slot, plus slots for M.2E and M.2B Key cards. Apparently a Wi-Fi card is not included by default in any of the configurations selling on Amazon.
Besides the passive cooling case, what sets this mini PC apart is the port selection that includes 6x Intel i226-V 2.5 GbE network cards plus a network console GbE jack. The peripheral connector selection is robust as well, with a Thunderbolt 4, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, 4x USB 2.0, DP + HDMI video outputs and 2x SIM card slots(1x 5G + 1x 4G).
