Disastrous RTX 4070 SUPER launch sales that are reportedly worse than RTX 4080 prompt even scalpers to cancel orders

NVIDIA newly-released RTX 4070 SUPER may not be having the reception that Team Green might have hoped for as a report out of Moore’s Law Is Dead suggests bad launch day sales. Quoting multiple retail, AIB, and scalper sources, the leaker alleges the RTX 4070 SUPER sales to be potentially lower than the RTX 4080 which also had a rough Day 1 per the leaker’s past claims.

NVIDIA launched the RTX 40 SUPER series of GPUs at CES 2024. The RTX 4070 SUPER is the first card of the trio to go up on sale at a starting price of $599, the same as the launch price of the RTX 4070. With an overall 9% to 13% bump in gaming vs the RTX 4070 per our review, the RTX 4070 SUPER presents a relatively good value proposition as it only costs 9% more than the now-cheaper RTX 4070 when we consider MSRP.

But, even with a value advantage, the RTX 4070 SUPER is selling quite badly at launch according to Moore’s Law Is Dead.

The leaker reports that, per his “Large US Retailer” source, the RTX 4070 SUPER had a lukewarm reception at launch with sales being “very low”. The source claimed that although the card is selling “better than the RTX 4080” it is not anything to write home about. In contrast, a different retail source suggested “worse than RTX 4080” sales. We reported back in November 2022 that the RTX 4080 sales were allegedly horrible. So, even if the RTX 4070 SUPER is potentially doing better than the RTX 4080, it isn’t anything to celebrate.

Moving on, the same source also maintained that only the MSRP models are selling which means that AIB variants that cost north of $600 are supposedly not garnering any consumer interest. A similar report is shared by another retail source who claimed that nobody has shown interest in the RTX 4070 SUPER whereas “a dozen people” have preordered the RTX 4080 SUPER.

The most damning claim is made by an AIB source who alleged to MLID that the RTX 4070 SUPER sales are, unsurprisingly, “a DISASTER”. The source expressed frustration over the AIB having to sell models priced above MSRP while NVIDIA is pushing MSRP Founders Edition on its site. Interestingly, NVIDIA’s bad attitude towards its AIB partners, which included becoming a de-facto competitor with FE models, was one of the reasons why EVGA stopped selling GPUs altogether.

Furthermore, a “Small US Retailer” allegedly refused to accept an RTX 4070 SUPER supply of 200 AIB cards as about 66% of the boards cost between $620-650. The retailer believed that “it would be nearly impossible to get gamers in 2024 to buy a 12 GB GPU above $600”. The feeling might be not misplaced as one look around Newegg is enough to confirm that there indeed are a bunch of RTX 4070 SUPER cards above $620 and some at $650 in stock at the time of writing.

Finally, MLID reports that the RTX 4070 SUPER is so unwanted that even scalpers are canceling their orders resulting in more FE models potentially being available for purchase soon.

Before we wrap this up, it is important to mention that the RTX 4070 SUPER was released just yesterday, so it is too early to declare the situation a failed launch. So, take MLID's report with a dose of skepticism.
