MediaTek's latest flagship SoC, the Dimensity 9400, was launched yesterday and has now been tested alongside the Apple A18 Pro to provide a solid idea of how it performs on both the CPU and GPU sides.

MediaTek finally launched its flagship chipset for the year, the Dimensity 9400, yesterday. While the Dimensity 9400 is unlikely to see widespread adoption on the level of its Qualcomm rival, the chipset will be used on devices from OPPO and Vivo at the very least, with the OPPO Find X8 Pro already being tested to showcase the performance credentials of the new chipset.

As evaluated by popular review outlet Geekerwan, the Dimensity 9400 on the OPPO Find X8 Pro scores a bit over 9000 on Geekbench 6's multi-core test, about a 15% improvement over the Dimensity 9300+ but narrowly edged out by the A18 Pro on Apple's new iPhone 16 Pro models. Power draw looks to be a bit of an issue, however, with the Dimensity 9400 consuming over 18 W, significantly more than the A18 Pro's 12 W.

While the Dimesnity 9400 closes in on the A18 Pro in multi-core tests, its Cortex-X925 fails to match the prime core of last year's A17 Pro. The X925 core, clocked at 3.60 GHz, lags behind the iPhone 15 Pro's chipset, and even further behind the iPhone 16 Pro's, with a SPECint score of 8.73. Comparatively, the A17 Pro scores 9.39 while the A18 Pro sits atop the pile with a score of 10.63. Again, the Dimensity 9400 (7.1 W) performs worse while drawing more power than both Apple chipsets (5.7 W for the A17 Pro and 6.2 W for the A18 Pro).

GPU performance is a different matter, however. The Dimensity 9400 records a score of about 2700 on 3DMark's Steel Nomad Light test, while the A18 Pro ekes out a score in the region of 2200. Last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3? 1800. Even better, the Dimensity 9400 (11.2 W) also draws less power than the A18 Pro (11.5 W) on the test.
