October is shaping up to be a big month for smartphone SoCs as both the Dimensity 9400 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 are launching shortly. However, the release of these flagship SoCs might be soured by the increase in smartphone pricing, as a prominent leaker suggests the chips cost 20% more than their predecessors.

Thanks to numerous reports over the past years, we know that the TSMC 3 nm process node is not cheap, as each N3 wafer is said to cost $20,000 or more. The higher the price of a wafer, the higher the price of the SoCs. So, it is quite logical that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and the Dimensity 9400 have a higher cost than their predecessors.

We may now know how much the Dimensity 9400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 might cost smartphone makers thanks to information posted on Weibo by Digital Chat station.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 price

Digital Chat Station claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 costs $190 for smartphone makers. This Snapdragon 8 gen 4 price is markedly lower than what Ice Universe alleged earlier this month. Additionally, if we believe DCS is right, Qualcomm is charging manufacturers $10 less, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 allegedly costs smartphone makers around $200.

Here, we have to call into question DCS’ pricing data. We know from past reports that the TSMC N3 is a costly process node. Even DCS alleges as such. Since the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 utilizes N3E and the supposedly pricey Oryon cores, one would expect the SoC to cost more than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Sadly, Qualcomm doesn’t share the actual costs of its SoCs, so we won’t be able to confirm the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 pricing even after phones powered by the chip come to the market.

MediaTek Dimensity 9400 price

When it comes to pricing, things look better for the Dimensity 9400. The leaker suggests that MediaTek’s much-hyped chip only costs $155. Combined with the promise of impressive performance, this discount over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 may see considerably wider adoption than the Dimensity 9300.

The first phones powered by the Dimensity 9400 are expected to come from Vivo and Oppo in the form of the Vivo X200 Pro and the Oppo Find X8 respectively. We can even see Samsung jump on the Dimensity 9400 bandwagon with the Galaxy S25. If Samsung does use MediaTek’s chip in one of its flagship smartphones, it will be a significant blow to Qualcomm’s tight grip on the flagship Android market.
