Can Dell dominate the 17-inch market the same way it captured the 15-inch market? The XPS 17 is surprisingly compact with specifications that read like something twice the size, but a few small details miss the mark.

I was very impressed with the Dell XPS 15, but this XPS 17 is bigger and better. If you can pony up the extra cash for the XPS 17, then I highly suggest it. The display’s extra space is totally worth it, and the better specifications will help those using heavy apps. The 2020 Dell XPS 17 9700 is the king of the hill in the world of 17″ Windows laptops.

All of it comes in a beautiful chassis and yes, a small footprint. The fact that this thing has a 17-inch display and can fit in a regular bag is a feat of engineering. Honestly, the Dell XPS 17 is in a class all its own, and I can't think of anything like it. If you're looking for a laptop that can do everything, this is it.

Lisa Gade reviews the Dell XPS 17 (9700), the new 17” model in the XPS lineup of premium laptops. Though the footprint isn’t much bigger than the already compact and slim XPS 15, Dell managed to pack a 17” IPS class 16:10 aspect ratio display. It’s available with a full HD+ or wide gamut 4K+ display, both rated at 500 nits with HDR 400 support. The notebook runs Windows 10 on Intel 10th gen, 45 watt CPUs up to an 8-core i9. It’s available with NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q or GTX 1650 Ti dedicated graphics. It has an MS Precision trackpad, white backlit keyboard, 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, Wi-Fi 6, upgradable RAM and M.2 SSDs and two forms of biometrics. It’s geared toward content creation and consumption, though it can handle some gaming too.

The new Dell XPS 17 makes a big first impression, and that's not only because it's the first 17-inch XPS laptop in almost a decade. Compared to the last XPS 17 we reviewed long ago, or even most modern 17-inch laptops, it's (relatively) small, with a slim, top-of-the-line design and a tiny-bezeled 4K-plus calibrated display.

In short, this isn’t the best laptop for anyone who’s mostly working in Chrome around the house or in libraries or coffee shops. It’s really for power users who might need to occasionally work on the go and who have found that smaller screens and lower-powered systems fall short of their needs. For that person, this is the best laptop to buy.

Dell is one of the few manufacturers that offer large multimedia laptops without dedicated graphics cards. If you are not interested in gaming, you can still get a high-end multimedia laptop for a lower price. However, even the base model XPS 17 9700 with the small Core i5 is anything but cheap.

You know, when you first see a 17-inch laptop with bezels so thin, you just can’t help but marvel at the engineering miracle you’re seeing. Combine this with the fact that that said display can run at 600 nits of maximum brightness and you can barely notice there are any bezels around it. However, as with the 15-inch model, there is something fundamentally wrong with Dell’s offering. And you have guessed it right – the base version of the device. You just can’t offer a Core i5-10300H model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (no matter how fast it is) and put it at $1450. And if you want to get the next option, which includes the more powerful Core i7-10750H and the GTX 1650 Ti, you need to spend $600 more (yet you get double the memory and the storage). And things really get out of control if you want the 4K display, which will set you back a total of $2900.
