Reviews for the Dell XPS 17 9720
The current Dell XPS 17 9720 is receiving the new Intel Alder Lake processors with the continued ability to combine them with RTX GPUs from Nvidia. However, compared to the predecessor, the graphics performance was reduced and the cooling is slightly weak overall. It's about time for an extensive update.

Push the feeling that the XPS design team is rather resting on its laurels to one side and the XPS 17 is a truly impressive omni-competent machine that should suit anyone in the creative industries or simply anyone who just wants a good large screen notebook for general use. That screen, of course, is the key feature: large, bright, colourful and pin-sharp it’s hard to beat and it's accompanied by a top-notch sound system to make a truly excellent multi-media machine. The GPU’s low TGP setting is a small drawback but outside of hardcore gaming, it’s not a problem that makes itself felt and a higher power rating would have had an impact on battery life. In short, the new XPS 17 is just as good as the previous version, just more powerful thanks to the new Alder Lake processor.

The Dell XPS 17 (2022) looks identical to last year’s model, but it's still one of the slickest and sleekest 17-inch laptops around and now packs Intel’s latest 12th Gen CPUs for epic performance and surprisingly good battery life.

What exactly do you want from your laptop? Do you prefer it to be thin, light, and versatile, or do you need all of the power in the world? The answers to these questions will greatly affect your purchase decision. If you want the latter, you would probably steer clear of the XPS 17. Its form factor just doesn’t allow it to take advantage of the horsepower its processor can output, while also limiting the TGP options for the graphics card. Both of that could be seen in the benchmarks, where the laptop was only performing well in the rather short Adobe Photoshop test. Ultimately though, this laptop is made for creators – since photographers are part of this group of people, we think that the aforementioned test is pretty promising. Then comes the display. Dell XPS 17 9720’s IPS panel has a 17-inch diagonal, Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It also features a very high maximum brightness, while it covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut. Furthermore, our Gaming and Web design profile really improves the color accuracy and helps it fall right into the standards of sRGB.

The 2022 edition of the Dell XPS 17 is as ever a virtually unique big screen laptop. It’s slim and relatively light, has a premium, rigid unibody aluminum design and performance verging on gaming laptop territory. This refresh has Intel 12th gen Alder Lake H series CPUs, NVIDIA RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 dedicated graphics options and upgradable RAM and storage. There are2 display options, both being 6:10 aspect ratio and 500 nit: full HD and 4K wide gamut touch. This is a creator laptop for Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Blender and more, though of course it can handle some gaming too. It’s closest competitors are the 17” Razer Blade and 16” MacBook Pro.

Model:
The latest from the Dell family is none other than the Dell XPS 17 (9720). In terms of its design, there is not much to say about the case of the XPS 17, since the workmanship offers an extremely high quality, and the construction is very robust. In addition, with its very slim bezels (resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of 91%), the device continues to look very modern and not aged at all. However, it is worth noting that the black carbon design on the top of the base unit still gets dirty easily. When this device is being handled, it quickly becomes clear that it is definitely not a light laptop. As far as its connectivity is concerned, this model offers four modern Thunderbolt ports with USB-C connectors. While the ports are of course very versatile, in practice they also might require some adapters. Apparently Dell also knows this, as a USB-C adapter with USB-A and HDMI is included in the package. As for its keyboard, it is positioned in the centre and flanked by the speaker openings. In addition, its colour matches the case colour, so it is either black or white. While in terms of the mechanics itself, the user will still get a short key stroke of 1.3 mm (~0.05 in) and the overall typing experience is only mediocre. However, this is also due to the impression of its clattering. There is definitely some room for improvement here as Dell uses better keyboards in their business and workstation models. While the white background illumination works well, it cannot be activated automatically by the brightness sensor. In contrast, the large ClickPad gives no reason for complaint. It not only work very reliably, but also offers plenty of space for gestures with up to four fingers.
As for its display, the Dell XPS 17 is still one of the few laptops that offer panels with full AdobeRGB coverage. Well, at this point, it is worth mentioning that this represents an exception, since most OLED panels and even the current DreamColor displays from HP are adjusted toward the DCI-P3 standard. Apart from that, Dell has also included the Premier Colour software which allows the users to switch between various profiles and colour spaces. In terms of its performance, this device has been equipped with the Intel Core i7-12700H processor. It is also worth noting that, in everyday operation, mainly the integrated and efficient Iris Xe Graphics G7 of the processor is used, which is also able to handle the reproduction of high-resolution videos without any problems. The dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 with 4 GB of RAM and a maximum clock speed of 1875 MHz is automatically activated if the user needs more graphics. Overall, it is a great device to be explored, depending on the need and preference of the user.

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
