Reviews for the Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1
We weren't thrilled that the 2020 Latitude 9410 2-in-1 was little more than a 2019 Latitude 7400 under a different name. This year's Latitude 9420 2-in-1 is what last year's model should have been in terms of features and design.

I always feel like the biggest Achilles’ Heel for the Latitude 9000 series is just that it exists. It uses to go up to the 7000 series until a couple of years ago. At that point, Dell said no, 7000 is not premium enough and we need a whole new tier just for how premium we want to get. So now, the only way to do this is to compare it to business laptop titans like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga and the HP EliteBook x360 1040. Let’s be fair here. The Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1 has an excellent 16:10 display, a solid keyboard, and narrow bezels. It also has a lot of great business features like ExpressSign-in, which wakes your PC and logs you in without you ever having to touch it. It’s also got a lot of flaws. It’s tough to compete with HP’s and Lenovo’s offerings, which have better keyboards and weigh less. And while none of the three machines have one, I’m still going to criticize the lack of a 1080p camera, especially because Dell is using FHD cameras across its Latitude 7000 lineup.

I have very few complaints about this Latitude. Even things I usually complain about on laptops — the webcam and the audio — were pretty good here. The 9420 is a solid ThinkPad competitor, and easily one of the best business convertibles you can buy. It can accommodate photo and video work, and it can even run lighter games on the side. But, of course, there’s the price. Even the base model’s price tag will be out of reach for many people. As Dell’s and Intel’s representatives have noted, this laptop is really for folks who need both the vPro platform and the Evo platform — the best business features and the best consumer features in one product. If you are in that group, the Latitude 9420 is a solid package that asks very few compromises. It’s premium technology for a premium price.

Dell’s Latitude line is the answer to Lenovo’s ThinkPad business notebooks, some of the best laptops on the market. Latitudes aren’t much to look at, but they come packed with security features. There’s a proximity sensor that automatically locks and unlocks the screen. There’s a physical webcam shutter that moves on its own. There’s the Dell Optimizer program which (in theory) learns your behavior over time and tailors everything from audio quality to charging speed accordingly. Most significantly, the Latitude line supports Intel’s vPro, a hardware and firmware platform that includes a number of security features and makes it easier for IT departments to manage devices remotely.

Available either as a conventional clamshell or a 2-in-1 convertible, the Latitude 9420 is Dell's ultimate 14-inch business laptop. You'll pay a princely sum to own it, as evidenced by the sticker of our well-equipped review unit. In exchange, you get a sleek, compact machine with few drawbacks other than a smaller battery pack than its predecessor's.If you balk at the 9420's price, you'll want to consider the 2-in-1 version of Dell's Latitude 7420 instead. The clamshell version is our current top pick among premium business notebooks, and while its chassis is a bit more portly, it offers most of the same headlining features available on the flagship unit. Or, if you prioritize a 4K screen and typing comfort above all else in a business 2-in-1, the also excellent Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga is also worth close consideration.

If I had to choose between these today, I'd go with the Latitude 9420 2-in-1 with the QHD+ display. It's rare to get such a gorgeous, high-res panel without sacrificing battery life. Moreover, Dell's premium business notebook has fast all-around performance, good speakers and plenty of useful security features, including an automatic webcam shutter. These qualities combine to make the Latitude 9420 2-in-1 our top pick for the best premium business 2-in-1 laptop.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
