Corsair has a new external SSD on offer that is designed to withstand heavy physical stress and be used under adverse conditions. Very high data transfer rates are advertised.

The Corsair EX400U Survivor is a new SSD that is also designed to offer a certain level of protection. The SSD is already available in stores and comes in models with storage capacities of one, two, and four terabytes. The starting price is $145 for 1 TB, while the four-terabyte version goes up to $410.

Fast data transfer

Regardless of the model chosen, high data transfer rates are promised. It connects via USB 4 at up to 40 GBit/s, with a maximum read speed of 4,000 MByte/s and a maximum write speed of 3,600 MByte/s. Of course, these data rates can only be achieved under optimal conditions and thus with sequential data transfers. In addition, the entire data transfer chain must support such high speeds. When backing up data from a hard drive, for example, this immediately becomes a bottleneck.

Limited protection

The EX400U is specified as weighing 149 grams and advertised as being somewhat robust. The SSD is designed to withstand vibrations and physical forces within certain limits and can be used at temperatures between 0 and 70 °C. According to Corsair, the EX400U meets IP55 requirements, which provides a certain degree of protection against damage caused by water and dust, but serious damage can still occur if the device is submerged, as IP55 certification only guarantees protection against water jets. The EX400U Survivor can also be attached to a backpack, for example, using a strap.
