After more than 25 years, a major chapter in Springfield is coming to a close. Al Jean, who has served as showrunner and producer of The Simpsons since season 13, is stepping away from the series – at least for now. In a post on X on October 27, he wrote:
Jean’s most recent episode, titled Bad Boys... For Life? (season 37, episode 5), was written by him personally. Having worked on The Simpsons as a writer and producer since the 1990s, he took over as showrunner in 2001 and has remained a key figure ever since. It’s still unclear whether his departure is permanent or if he’ll stay connected to the series in another capacity. Fans are already speculating that he might now shift his focus to the upcoming second Simpsons movie, which is slated for release in 2027.
An official successor hasn’t been named yet, but speculation suggests that co-showrunner Matt Selman could assume creative leadership. In the meantime, The Simpsons continues to set new longevity records. FOX has already renewed the iconic series through season 40, with a clear goal: to keep modernizing the show while staying true to its signature Springfield humor.
