Born two decades ago, when it arrived on arcade devices (2005) and Dreamcast consoles (2006), the fast-paced helicopter shooter Under Defeat has returned a few times so far, but now it re-launches with more goodies and wider availability than ever before. In addition to Windows PCs, the list of supported hardware also includes the Sony PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, as well as Microsoft's Xbox consoles.
Sporting both improved graphics and a refined soundtrack that was rearranged by the original composer, Under Defeat now sports three game modes. These are the modes and their highlights:
- Arcade - A pseudo-vertical screen with a 4:3 ratio, accurately reproducing the original arcade experience.
- New Order - A modern adaptation that is fully compatible with 16:9 displays.
- New Order+ - Same as the above, but with new mechanics such as the warning gauge, which adds a risk/reward element to assist the player while engaged in shooting and bombing runs.
Developed by City Connection, this modern version of Under Defeat includes DLC content that was only available in Japan. Those looking to grab the 2012 release of this game that targeted PlayStation 3 consoles can still find it on Amazon. Marketed as Under Defeat: Deluxe Edition, it can be acquired for $49.99. On the other hand, Steam users can grab it with a 10% discount until February 13th ($17.99 instead of $19.99).
