Casio's newest product isn't a G-Shock — it's the LK-550, and it's aimed at your brain

The Casio LK-550 keyboard comes in two colorways — white and black.
Casio's LK-550WE and LK-550BK arrive on September 4 with brain-activity BGM and karaoke functions drawn from University of Tokyo research. Thirty years into the lighted-key line, the launch also shows where Casio's watch profits are being spent.

Casio is launching the LK-550WE and LK-550BK on September 4, the 30th anniversary year of its lighted-key navigation keyboards. It will also be the first release built around joint research with the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.

Two main functions carry that research. Brain-activity BGM sorts built-in tracks by tempo — faster hakadoru pieces are intended to support task focus and slower totonou pieces are meant to relax, after Casio found that tempo shifts brain state. Brain-activity karaoke is what the name suggests: the keyboard plays the backing track, and you sing over it using the bundled microphone and printed lyric booklet.

The karaoke evidence comes from a trial run in Kunitachi between February and March 2026 with 25 healthy older adults. The test was based on 20-minute sessions on the previous-generation LK-530. NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) measurement showed right prefrontal blood-flow response beginning an average of 2.9 seconds earlier in a spatial memory task after karaoke, and repetition speed for the "ka" sound in the pa-ta-ka articulation test improved by a lot. Casio presented the findings at Neuro2026 in late July. Pricing is open across the range, and the cheaper LK-350 ships alongside without either new function.

For readers who follow Casio through its watches, this is the division G-Shock underwrites. Timepieces make up roughly two-thirds of sales in the fiscal year (ending March 31, 2026) and returned ¥27.1 billion in operating profit, against ¥3.4 billion from the entire consumer segment that houses the sound business. Basically, this looks to be Casio testing whether university-backed health claims can revive a struggling instrument line.
