To mark musician Tamio Okuda’s return from a brief retirement, Casio has quietly lined up a new limited-edition G-Shock collab that drops on May 12 through the Sony Music official store. It’s based on the GW-M5610U, and the price is set at ¥35,000 (roughly $243).
The watch doesn’t go overboard, but it’s packed with thoughtful touches if you’re a fan of Okuda or just like unique editions. The layout sticks to G-Shock classic square format, with a stealthy black body and resin strap. What stands out is the digital display - text like "Tamio" and “Gekitotsu Resist” (which roughly translates to "Impact/Shock Resistance") are built right into the layout, which replaces some of the standard interface labels.
On the back, you’ll find a custom engraved caseback with Okuda’s emblem, and the strap keeper is subtly marked as well. Even the box and can packaging lean into his music aesthetic, using a red and black theme that plays on speaker volume knobs and recording gear.
That said, the watch itself is mostly business-as-usual in terms of specs. You’ve got Multiband 6, Tough Solar, standard alarms, stopwatch, and so on. It’s still a GW-M5610U at the core - practical, reliable, but not feature-packed by today’s G-Shock standards. So unless the design or artist connection means something to you, there’s nothing radically new here under the hood.
Orders open at midnight on May 12, but shipping doesn’t start until mid-August. It’s being sold in limited quantities exclusively through Sony Music’s Japanese webstore, so international fans may need to hunt aftermarket.
