Casio releases the DW-5000R G-Shock watch honoring the original 1983 model
Casio has unveiled the DW-5000R G-Shock rugged digital watch in celebration of the 1983 debut of the DW-5000C, the original G-Shock watch. The design of the DW-5000R intentionally mimics the DW-5000C in many respects, including the wrist band hole design and layout, the bezel design and wording, and location of the light button. However, minute design differences still exist for eagle-eyed collectors to find.
The latest G-Shock uses a fairly normal 3576 watch module powered by a single CR2016 lithium battery with a five-year battery life. The module sits behind mineral glass inside a stainless steel case encased in carbon-neutral, bio-based resin, which was not available when the DW-5000C debuted. The rugged design of the G-Shock watch isolates the module from shock and damage and allows submersion in water to a depth of 200 meters (656 ft.).
Timekeeping is accurate to +/-15 seconds per month, which is normal performance for quartz watches. The watch has a 24-hour countdown timer, a 1/100-second stopwatch, and an auto-calendar good until the year 2099. The watch has an alarm with an hourly chime. A Super Illuminator high-brightness LED has been added to the DW-5000R, and the watch can flash the LED in sync with the alarm, hourly chime, and countdown timer.
The DW-5000R measures 1.93 x 1.70 x 0.52 in. (48.9 × 42.3 × 13.1 mm) and weighs 2.68 oz. (76 g). The official international model number is DW-5000R-1A and the Japanese model number is DW-5000R-1AJF.
The DW-5000R G-Shock watch has an MSRP of 33,000 yen (~$215) in Japan and will be available for purchase in Japan on December 13. US pricing and availability have not been announced yet, but the watch is expected to be available soon from the Casio Store on Amazon US.
Readers who want an alternative that uses solar charging to eliminate the need to replace the battery, as well as an atomic time setting to keep the watch perfectly on time and wrist rotation detection to turn on the auto light, can pick up the fuss-free GWM5610-1 G-Shock watch, currently on sale at Amazon.

Casio to Release Re-creation of First-Ever G-SHOCK
News provided by CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD
Nov 27, 2024, 20:00 ET
TOKYO, Nov. 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Casio Computer Co., Ltd. announced today the release of the latest addition to the G-SHOCK family of shock-resistant watches. The new DW-5000R re-creates the very first G-SHOCK released in 1983, DW-5000C, with meticulous faithfulness.
The launch of G-SHOCK back in 1983 ushered in an entirely new genre of toughness in wristwatch design, bringing watches into demanding environments such as construction sites and intense sports. Casio has continued to deliver innovative products and services, changing people's lives and making the world a better place.

Face captures the iconic red, blue, and yellow accents of the original model
In honor of the occasion, Casio returned to the origins of G-SHOCK, which created an all-new market category for watches, with the desire to see the G-SHOCK brand once again create a new watch category. The result, the DW-5000R, a more faithful reproduction of DW-5000C than any other limited-edition revival of the past,[1] establishes this re-creation of the very first G-SHOCK as a standard in the Casio lineup.

The band reproduces the original DW-5000C design not only in length, but in the unevenness of the area around the band holes and even in the position of the dimples.[2] The top surface, displaying the "PROTECTION" and "G-SHOCK" letterings, features the original bezel's flat design, and the red, blue, and yellow coloring replicates the original face design. The intense focus on evoking the look of the original extends to the most subtle details, including the stainless-steel center case and screw-lock case back engraved with the phrase "Shock Resistant." DW-5000R is even produced at Yamagata Casio — the "mother factory" of G-SHOCK — where the original model was created.

While extremely faithful to the original, this model has also been updated with contemporary features such as a high-brightness LED backlight and a bezel and band made with bio-based resin, a material expected to help reduce environmental impact.

The first generation "G-SHOCK" reissue model is released.
DW-5000R
On December 13, Casio Computer Co., Ltd. (CASIO) will release the DW-5000R, a reprint of the first DW-5000C released in 1983, as a new product of its shock-resistant watch "G-SHOCK".
This year, we formulated our purpose of "bringing joy beyond today to each and every one of us through the power of making surprises more accessible." Just as the G-SHOCK has expanded its use to harsh environments such as construction sites and intense sports, and established the genre of "toughness watches," it has contributed to society through the provision of a variety of innovative products and services.
The DW-5000R has been decided to be a standard model with the intention of returning to the origins of "G-SHOCK", which created a new category in the watch market, and creating a new category with "G-SHOCK" again. Compared to the reprint model*1 that has been sold in limited quantities so far, this is a reissue model of the DW-5000C that achieves a higher degree of reproducibility.
*1 Released in the past as a limited edition model for the "G-SHOCK" anniversary, such as the DW-5040.
The band follows the DW-5000C not only in length, but also in the uneven shape of the band hole part and the position of the dimple*2 applied to the first model. The flattened part of the text on the top of the bezel and the red, blue, and yellow coloring of the face are the same design. We paid attention to every detail, such as the stainless steel center case and the screw back engraved with "Shock Resistant". The DW-5000R will be produced at Yamagata Casio, the mother plant of G-SHOCK.
On the other hand, some specifications have been updated, such as the installation of a high-brightness LED backlight and the use of biomass plastic for the bezel and band, which reduces environmental impact.
