To commemorate the 60th anniversary of its first electronic desktop calculator, Casio has introduced the MS-20UC-J series, a collection that blends traditional Japanese design with a renewed commitment to sustainability. This launch follows January’s Comfy JT-200T release, which, as reported by the Verge, introduced a muted colour scheme and a top-mounted solar panel. The latest MS-20UC-J series takes a different approach, drawing on traditional patterns and cultural symbolism.
The new MS-20UC-J series presents three variations rooted in Japanese cultural symbolism. The red Asanoha model features a hemp leaf motif, associated with strength and growth. The blue Seigaiha version displays a wave pattern symbolising calm and continuity, while the white Takekago edition features a bamboo weave pattern representing resilience and balance. Each calculator retains the functionality of Casio’s widely used MS-20UC layout, making it practical for daily use at school or in the office.
The MS-20UC-J series reflects the company’s broader environmental priorities. According to Casio’s official announcement, the MS-20UC-J calculators are produced using recycled plastics. Their packaging has also been redesigned, reducing plastic use by approximately 81 percent through the use of recyclable paper-based materials.
Casio’s broader environmental efforts are guided by its Environmental Vision 2050, a long-term plan to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, promote resource recycling and coexist with nature. This strategy is backed by Green Targets 2024, which outline short-term objectives. Casio also operates an environmental management system certified under ISO 14001 standards to co-ordinate sustainable practices throughout its organisation.
Although part of an international launch, Casio confirmed in the same announcement that the MS-20UC-J series will not be available in certain markets, including Cyprus, Poland, Russia, Spain and Ukraine.
