The Asus ROG Xbox Ally received a lukewarm reception on its October release date. Although cheaper than the $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X, it can’t run all AAA games at ultra settings. Nevertheless, the Windows gaming handheld excels as a comfortable way to play a large library of titles. With a new sale at several major retailers, it compares more favorably to budget alternatives.
Buyers will find a ROG Xbox Ally price of $489.99 at Amazon and $499.99 at Best Buy. Discounts from its $599.99 MSRP have been rare at this early stage.
Affordability comes at the expense of power
Notebookcheck’s ROG Xbox Ally review found its Ryzen Z2 A processor underwhelming. The Z2 Extreme processor of its more expensive cousin boosts performance tremendously. With demanding titles, buyers may have to lower the 7-inch IPS display’s 1080p resolution. That said, competitive gamers will celebrate its maximum 120Hz refresh rate, with VRR support minimizing tearing.
Even if some selections are too taxing, the Microsoft-endorsed system unlocks access to multiple marketplaces. Through the new Xbox Full Screen Experience, Steam is among the options gamers can browse with analog sticks. While it provides a more console-like feel, Windows 11 may interrupt navigation with unexpected pop-ups.
The ROG Xbox Ally thrives when streaming
The ROG Xbox Ally specs excel with cloud gaming, a strength of budget gaming handhelds. Provided its Wi-Fi 6E chip connects to a fast enough network, owners can enjoy high-quality streaming. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is now more costly, but Microsoft has increased bitrates. This experience also won’t monopolize the device’s 512GB M.2 SSD.
Another strong point for the mobile Asus system is ergonomics. Improving on the ROG Ally, its handles are designed to better support palms. The Windows handheld is reasonably lightweight at 670 grams, but it weighs more than the Switch 2, despite having a smaller screen.
Many buyers may prefer the Steam Deck OLED for its high-contrast display and streamlined interface. Still, at a $489.99 ROG Xbox Ally price, the decision becomes less clear-cut. Gamers willing to make the effort can also install SteamOS for the best of both worlds.
