Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the company is teaming up with Bad Robot Games, the videogame subsidiary of J.J. Abrams’ production company, for its debut internally developed title, spearheaded by Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth.
This is a big step up for Bad Robot Games, which previously collaborated on creative projects with Valve, Epic Games, and Konami. The upcoming game is reported to be a four-player co-op shooter, currently in the works for PC and PlayStation 5. Sony promises that further details will be revealed at a later date.
J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot has worked on franchises like Star Wars Episodes VII and IX, the Star Trek reboot trilogy, and the Cloverfield series. Now Bad Robot Games, the company’s gaming division, is aiming to make a mark in the game industry with its first in-house project.
The unnamed project is being directed by the studio’s Chief Creative Officer, Mike Booth, who joined Bad Robot in 2020. Booth is a Valve veteran who worked on the critically acclaimed four-player co-op title Left 4 Dead and its sequel as creator and lead designer.
Left 4 Dead revolutionized the co-op FPS genre with its intense zombie-survival gameplay. Now, Bad Robot Games' upcoming title promises to channel the same spirit.
Bad Robot Games CEO Anna Sweet issued a statement:
Partnering with Sony Interactive Entertainment allows us to bring our new IP to life, with an expansive vision for this new universe.
With the support of PlayStation, we hope to deliver a bold, innovative experience that is truly special for players. I could not be more excited that Mike Booth is at the creative helm, crafting a cooperative adventure that will lead to unforgettable moments with friends.
Vice President and head of 2P/3P content ventures and strategic initiatives at SIE, Christian Svensson, also chimed in and said, “We’re greatly impressed with the talent Bad Robot Games has assembled at their studio, and are thrilled to partner with them to help product and publish their upcoming game.
Their unique creative voice and passion for innovating across all forms of interactive entertainment perfectly align with SIE’s mission to craft experiences that deeply resonate with players. We can’t wait for gamers to step into the world they’ve been building.”
