Bang & Olufsen has announced the third iteration of its Beosound A1 portable Bluetooth speaker. The Beosound A1 3rd Gen, as it is officially known, isn't very different from its predecessor in terms of appearance. Although it does bring a few improvements.
The speaker retains the donut-shaped design of the previous generation. It has the same dimensions and keeps the IP67 dust and water resistance rating, but is now a little heavier. It is also available in fewer color options. Unlike the Beosound A1 2nd Gen that comes in six colors, the Beosound A1 3rd Gen is available in just three — Natural Aluminum, Honey Tone, and Eucalyptus Green — all of which have an aluminum body and a waterproof leather strap.
In terms of audio output, Bang & Olufsen says it has an improved woofer that delivers extra bass. It will also last up to 24 hours on a single charge, an upgrade from the 18 hours of the 2nd gen. Like its earbuds, the Beoplay Eleven (available on Amazon for $476.19), the Beosound A1 has a replaceable battery, but it has to be done by an authorized service center or showroom.
Unfortunately, the Beosound A1 3rd Gen no longer has support for Amazon's Alexa assistant. On the plus side, the speaker still has support for Bluetooth Multipoint, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, and has a Made for iPhone certification.
It also has support for Qualcomm's aptX Adaptive, and the three microphones on the speaker make it suitable for use as a speakerphone for taking calls. The Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 3rd Gen can also be paired to a second unit for stereo sound, and the best part is that it works even if the second speaker is a Beosound A1 2nd Gen.
The Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 3rd Gen is available to buy now for $349 in the US, £299 in the UK, and €349 in the rest of Europe. The 2nd gen model is currently available to buy for $228.74 on Amazon. The speaker comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable in the box for charging and for a wired connection. Bang & Olufsen is also offering up to 5 years of warranty.
