Asus is teasing a potential 20th Anniversary ROG Crosshair AM5 motherboard

Asus appears to be resurrecting its legendary ROG Crosshair copper heatsink for a 20th-anniversary limited-edition motherboard. The company recently dropped a teaser on Instagram showcasing sneak peeks of a sleek new ROG motherboard that bears a strong resemblance to the original 2006 model.
From the teaser, we can see the same pure-copper heatsink that made the original 2006 ROG Crosshair motherboard famous among PC enthusiasts, now with updated ROG branding.
For context, the original ROG Crosshair motherboard launched in 2006 and quickly became a legendary board for overclockers. It was Asus’s first high-end motherboard under the ROG branding and was built around AMD’s AM2 platform. The ROG Crosshair featured several advanced capabilities for its time, including an easily navigable BIOS, onboard buttons, and improved cooling across the board.
What truly stood out was the massive, pure-copper heatsink that stretched vertically across the ROG Crosshair's motherboard, featuring heat pipes linking the VRM, northbridge, and southbridge.
At the time, this massive chunk of copper on the ROG Crosshair allowed enthusiasts to squeeze every drop of extra performance out of their CPUs. According to the official ROG retrospective:
“The original ROG Crosshair motherboard set new standards in the era of dual-core Athlon 64 processors for Socket AM2. The ROG Crosshair redefined expectations for what a motherboard could be, and ROG has remained at the forefront of gaming and enthusiast hardware ever since.”
Celebrating ROG's 20th anniversary in full swing, Asus mentioned in its latest press release:
“As it reaches this milestone, ROG will continue to push boundaries with anniversary innovations and special-edition products that celebrate its legacy while signaling the future of gaming.”
The new teaser video showcased a silhouette of the upcoming 20th-anniversary ROG Crosshair motherboard. The copper heatsink design appears similar to the original 2006 variant but with a few modern ROG accents. The iconic “Fearless Eye” logo now sits where the old cubic “G” emblem once rested.
While it’s not yet clear exactly which model this motherboard will be, since Asus hasn’t revealed its specifications, reports from regulatory filings dating back to April list names like “ROG Crosshair X870E Edition 20” and “ROG Crosshair 2006,” indicating that the anniversary ROG Crosshair motherboard will likely be built on the AM5 platform featuring the X870E chipset.
