Asus released the 17-inch version of its high-end gaming laptop known as the GX531 shortly after Nvidia launched its Turing-based GPUs. Despite its slimness, the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is extremely capable and is supposed to strike fear into the hearts of the competitors. Read our review to find out if it succeeds at this.

Power-packed gaming laptops with a slim design are limited, most laptops designed for gamers are bulky and less portable than the regular laptops. The ASUS Zephyrus S GX701GX is the slimmest gaming notebook in its class right now, however, comes at a premium price. But, is it the ultimate portable gaming machine? For the price ASUS asks, the laptop guarantees top-notch performance and a reliable 144 Hz display for a smoother gaming experience.

The ASUS Zephyrus S GX701 isn’t a super complex laptop to wrap your mind around - even if it is an incredibly powerful one. It’s less a reinvention of what ASUS have done before, and more of an extension. All the same, the familiar heights it reaches are inevitably saddled with expensive caveats. If you can handle the larger size, limited ports, unconventional trackpad and iffy battery life found here, you can play pretty much anything on the ROG Zephyrus GX701.

The Asus Zephyrus S (GX701) is a machine that packs uncompromising hardware, maxed out in terms of the GPU and RAM. If the 1TB NVMe isn't enough for you, there's a spare NVMe slot on the board in case you want to throw another stick in there. The display offers a pristine gaming experience with its G-Sync support and the keyboard is a treat to game on. The new volume knob may not seem like much, but it is positioned perfectly for fine-tuning your audio while in the middle of a game without having to fumble with key combinations. The price for the machine is pretty steep, given that the Zephyrus cannot be considered a desktop replacement. It is, however, for the gamer and creator who are always on the move.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is by far, the best gaming laptop that I’ve ever reviewed. It has a great design, solid build quality, and 144Hz display. It also provides excellent performance especially with games while its thermals are very good to the point that it can handle massive process without having to throttle. The keyboard is somewhat awkward at first given the key’s spacing from each other while the trackpad placement is also small. However, you’ll get used to this quickly thanks to its great tactility.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 is a 17-inch ultraportable gaming laptop mostly meant for desk use, hooked up to a mouse, and potential buyers will primarily benefit from its smaller size, premium build, and lighter weight when carrying it around. It's nicely crafted, it types well, it gets a good-quality screen, punchy speakers and is one of the fastest RTX 2080 MQ devices on the market, but its ergonomics when not on a desk, limited IO and high price might steer you towards something else. We get in-depth on all these aspects in the review below.

Overall we are impressed by the Zephyrus GX701GX, however it is sufficiently different in its design that it doesn’t bear direct comparison with any other RTX laptop that springs to mind. The specification is very good and the performance is excellent, with just a few minor niggles holding it back.

Only if all the benefits I listed above matter to you. At Rs 3,49,990, the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 pinches the wallet hard. For almost the same price, you can build a custom gaming desktop PC with even more compelling hardware. Also, since you can only use the full potential of the Nvidia RTX 2080 in just a single game, for now, it is advisable to go for the ROG laptops with Nvidia GTX cards at much cheaper prices that can play the current crop of games with similar performance.

All in all though this is a great piece of tech. It’s expensive, yes, but so are the other thin-and-light 17-inchers with similar specs, so the form-factor remains the GX701’s important antagonizing factor, making this impractical while not on a spacious desk, but as the same time more comfortable than other devices while on a desk and hooked up to an external mouse.

All in all, I expect the 2019 Zephyrus GX701 to turn some heads and attract quite a few potential buyers if the final products actually deliver at the performance, thermals and noise levels. This is not going to be a cheap-laptop by any means, but ultraportable gaming laptops have never been cheap, and those with a 17-inch screen squeezed inside a compact shell are even harder to come by and there’s no wonder will demand a premium. In fact, there’s only the MSI GS75 Stealth Thin you could consider instead, for the time being. The 15-inch GX531 on the other hand pales in the more competitive niche of 15-inch ultraportables, and its multiple quirks and lacks compared to the 17-inch variant sure don’t help its cause.

Asus Zephyrus S GX701GVR-EV003R
The Zephyrus series hailing from the Asus brand bears a resounding name of considerable prevalence within the modern gaming industry. Zephyrus is one of the most widely acclaimed gaming laptop lineups to house astounding core specifications and graphics without cutting back on some slack when it comes to style in general. Boasting an all-new design with major key components to fuel the system, the Asus Zephyrus S GX701 arrives into the scene and makes its grand debut as the next generation of modern gaming powerhouse in order to carry on the Zephyrus lineup’s long-running legacy. The Asus Zephyrus S GX701 immediately stands out from the rest of the crowd just from its sheer size alone. It carries a measurement of 17 inch for its display and the vastness of the screen is further amplified by super narrow bezels in a chassis, which is just 18.7 millimeters thin. Gazing before the screen alone is undeniably surreal due to its width, but with multimedia graphics or content being projected on the 144 Hz, 3 ms panel with Pantone-validated colors only makes visuals just as breathtaking as real life scenery itself. The perplexity in weight, which comes with such extraordinary size is cleverly being counterbalanced by slim bezels and intuitive design, which makes the Asus Zephyrus S GX701 still conveniently redeemable to commute around as well as being fitted inside the average standard backpacks. The highflyer components laying dormant and waiting to be tapped into their fullest potential within the Asus Zephyrus S Gx701 are none other than the 9th generation Intel Core i7-9750H and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080. The i7-9750H enables performance rate to clock up to a speed of 4.5 GHz unlike any other, which is a significant increase of 50 % in performance when compared to other Intel Core processors. This six-core based processor alone is enough to make the Asus Zephyrus S GX701 to sustain the most demanding of applications or games. The Intel Core i7-9750H is coupled with the GeForce RTX 2080 in order to emulate the ultimate gaming experience. The GeForce RTX 2080 graphics processing unit has been known to integrate the Turing ray-tracing technology, which renders in-game graphics to a whole new level of thematic realism. When paired with a high-end processor of such caliber, this potent combination could possibly be one of the best components pairing to ever be graced in one’s gaming laptop of choice. Aside from that, the Asus Zephyrus S GX701 also introduces a quirky little feature known as the Volume Wheel, which serves as a convenient and accessible extension to adjust the volume of the laptop, while in the midst of an intense gaming session. ASUS has again delivered one of the best notebooks that you can buy today. The RTX 2060 GPU is good enough for most games out today and paired with Intel’s beefy CPU, the notebook can easily handle a diverse range of games without breaking a sweat. But you’ll be paying top peso for a gaming notebook like this, with ASUS pricing our particular configuration at Php 139,995. You can go even higher though, with the RTX 2080 variant going for Php 199,995.

Gamers need three things from their laptop or gaming machine. First, a good and well-calibrated responsive display; second: performance, and at last a little 'show-off' attitude from the device. Well, Asus Zephyrus S GX701 ticks all the boxes without any doubt. The laptop has a G-Sync enabled Pantone calibrated display with 144Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time making it one of the fastest displays on laptop in the market. The laptop comes with the latest generation Intel processor and RTX series graphics card results in more than enough performance than required and third, the show-off attitude, well, that's subjective, but the chunky ROG logo at the lid, individually lit RGB backlit in keyboard, AAS vent and that thin profile of the laptop gives it enough appeal as well. As the gaming laptop market starts to saturate with absurdly thin gaming laptops, the competition grows even more aggressive. This means, there is no space for mistakes. However, it is inevitable to make mistakes in an area that is lead by compromises. In order to achieve a thin and light gaming machine, you have to give up on something and the major issue manufacturers are dealing with is cooling.

Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701-EV020T
Let’s assume you have a good amount of money sitting in your pocket and waiting for you to spend it. But you don’t know what to buy. At the same time, you happen to be a gamer and you want something extravagant even though you won’t be needing everything too much. Look no further. The Asus Zephyrus S GX701 will not just help you spend the money in your pocket, it will also help you enjoy your games in ultra settings available. 144 Hz screen, check. 32 GB RAM, check. 1 TB SSD, check. Very high performance RTX 2080 GPU, check. Latest generation Intel 9750H CPU, check. What else would you be looking for? Oh, 2.6 kg of weight will definitely help you with the mobility. So, you can play your games whenever you want. Of course, one thing I am missing is a 4K screen. But again, with the current price of over 3,000 Euro, I guess a 144 Hz 4K screen would make it cost a lot more. But if you have the money for this configuration, I am pretty sure, you can find the money for that as well. What I am trying to state is this laptop is a luxury for some. Can you get the same specs for cheaper? I mean, it comes down to trade offs. 1 TB SSD and 32 GB RAM is something that most people would not be needing. If you are not dealing with video editing or raw imagery, 1 TB SSD is not something you will definitely need. One note of course, on some websites this model is shown with 16 GB of RAM as well. So it may depend on which region you are in. Other than the above mentioned things, there is not much to talk about the Zephyrus S GX701. It is a laptop that is primarily aimed at gamers. RGB keyboard, 144 Hz screen and of course RTX 2080 GPU is something that most people will never ever need. Of course, with this price tag, you may ask yourself, will it be worth it? Well, that is unfortunately something that I can not answer. Of course, you will get a piece of art for the next few years. At the same time, if mobility is not a concern and you are a hard core gamer, I guess you would not be interested in this laptop as you would be searching for a good desktop PC. Considering the price, I guess you can also add a 144 Hz monitor easily. Would I recommend this laptop to anyone? I am not so sure. Not because its capabilities, but because of its price. I always like to have some kind of price performance ratio. Unfortunately this laptop has none. As I said, it is just at the top of price list with really great features, features that most people will never need and features that can be bought cheaper from other manufacturers. The hardware of the Zephyrus S GX701GXR runs all current games smoothly on the matte 300 Hz IPS display. The laptop offers expansion/upgrade possibilities only to a very limited extent.

Asus wants to combine those characteristics in the Zephyrus S17. With Nvidia's RTX 2080 Super in the Max-Q design and a powerful Intel Core i7-10875H, the basic requirements are fulfilled, and using various tricks, sufficient cooling is supposed to be ensured. Our review clarifies whether this concept also really works in practice.
